How does Sac State define a server?

A server is defined as any electronic device on the Sac State network that is configured with the intent to provide information or services to other networked devices. Examples of information and services include, but are not limited to, web services, file transfers, email services, shared files, shared printers, and database services.


The Sacramento State network is the sum of all networked devices, where traffic originates within, or transits a campus-owned or operated facility. This is intended to include remote-access, auxiliary, and partner networks that receive network services from the University, such as ResLink, the Associated Students Inc., wireless, and VPN.

Which department do servers have to be registered with?

All servers must be registered with the IRT Information Security Office. The following information is needed for ownership:

  • Department name
  • Server administrator contact name, location, phone numbers, and e-mail address
  • Alternate server administrator contact name, location, phone numbers, and email address
  • Application administrator name, phone numbers, and e-mail address
  • Server owner name, phone numbers, and e-mail address
  • Server physical location
  • Server MAC address and corresponding IP address
  • Operating system/version
  • Main functions and applications

What is the response time for server registration?

The standard response to most server registration requests is three days.

What if I need my server registry to be handled before the standard response time?

If you need the server registry to be handled before the three day timeframe, please provide additional instructions on the Server Request Form and initial the box at the bottom of the form. The Information Security Office will contact you concerning the expedited request.
