Who can check out a laptop from the Laptop Loan Service?

Currently registered Sac State Graduate and Undergraduate students who are in good standing are eligible to borrow a laptop. The requirements for checking out a laptop are an active SacLink account and OneCard. Once each academic year, students who wish to check out a laptop, will be asked to sign the Laptop Computer Loan Agreement and Use Policy.

Where can I go to check out a laptop?

Three locations participate in the laptop loan service; the IRT Service Desk (AIRC 2005), the Library Media Center (1st floor of the Library), and the ASI Business Office (third floor in the Union).

Laptops may be checked out during the individual department's office hours. Laptops must be returned an hour before closing to the original checkout location.

Can I check out more than one laptop at a time?

No, a student can only check out one laptop at a time. Please refer to the Loan Agreement and Use Policy below for the conditions of use.

Can someone else check my laptop in for me if they have my OneCard?

No, the person who checked out the laptop must be present to return it. Please refer to the Loan Agreement and Use Policy below for the conditions of use.

Can I check out a laptop for my friend if I have their OneCard?

No, the student who wants to borrow a laptop must be present at the time of checkout with their OneCard. Please refer to the Loan Agreement and Use Policy below for the conditions of use.

What if I can’t make the deadline when it’s due back because I have class?

The maximum limit that a laptop can be checked out for is 4 hours. You will be charged a late fee if you are unable to return the laptop by its set return time. Please manage your time to avoid any late charges. To review the possible late fees please click Loan Agreement and Use Policy below.

What happens if I return a borrowed laptop late?

If you return the laptop late you will be charged a fee and subsiquently unable to check out a laptop for the remainder of the academic year. Please refer to the Loan Agreement and Use Policy below for the conditions of use.

Can I use the laptop off-campus?

No, access to the laptop requires that you authenticate via the Sacramento State wireless network.

What happens if the laptop is damaged, lost, or stolen?

The student will be required to reimburse Sacramento State for the cost of repairing or replacing the laptop if it is damaged, lost, stolen or not returned while checked out in the borrower's name. The student is fully responsible for the laptop during the time of check out. If the laptop is lost or stolen then the borrower will be charged a minnum of $2,000 plus processing fees. If it is damaged then the borrower is responsible for any repair costs.

I am unable to log into the laptop, what do I do?

Verify the following:

  • The laptop's wireless switch is activated
  • You are on-campus, within range of a wireless access point
  • Your using your SacLink username and password to connect to the CSUS domain

If you have verified all the steps above, tried restarting the computer, and still can not log into the laptop contact the IRT Service Desk or bring the laptop to the appropriate checkout location.

Is it possible to check out a charger for the laptop?

Chargers are unavailable for check out, however when fully charged the laptop's battery should last the maximum checkout time of 4 hours.

Can I reserve a laptop?

Laptops cannot be reserved, they are available on a first come-first serve basis. Please refer to the Loan Agreement and Use Policy below for the conditions of use.

Is it safe to save documentation to the laptop?

Any work that a student wishes to save should be saved to the SacFiles U: drive, emailed, or saved to a personal USB flash storage drive. Otherwise any documents will be deleted upon logging off, restarting or turning off the computer.

I am having problems with the laptop, who can help me?

If you are having hardware problems, check it in and notify the check-in assistant of the problem. If you have questions about how to use the software, visit the Student Technology Center in AIRC 3007 for assistance.

I have overdue materials from the Library. Can I still check out a laptop?

No, you must be in good standing with the Library before you can check out a laptop. Please refer to the Loan Agreement and Use Policy below for the conditions of use.

I am a faculty member, is it possible for me to check out a laptop longer then 4 hours?

While 4 hours is the standard limit, certin exceptions can be made if nessassary. Please notify the assistant a head of time if you plan to need a labtop for more than 4 hours.

Presentation equipment such as VGA, mini-audio cables and Mac adapters are available on a first come first serve basis for check out at the IRT Service Desk.
