Tutorial Caption Text My Sac State for Students – Class Search Topic: Search for Classes Time: 3 minutes Type: Demonstration TechNotes: Use the controls at the bottom of the screen to pause, fast forward and rewind this tutorial as necessary. This tutorial will cover the following topics: Overview of search options; Search for classes by subject; Search for GE classes. (Outline slide indicates the next topic) Overview of search options. Begin by signing on to My Sac State and navigating to the Student Services tab. Go to your Student Center by clicking the Student Center link. Your Student Center page will display. Select the Search for Classes button. The Class Search page will display. The Institution should default to Sacramento State. Leave as is. Click the Term drop down menu. Select the desired Term from the list. Click the Go button. The Class Search Criteria section will display various search options. You can search by basic class information like Subject, Course Number and Career (i.e., postbacc or undergrad). You can also search based upon Meeting Time and/or Day of the Week to find classes that fit into your schedule. Other key search options include GE Area, Graduation Requirements and a search for Online/Distance Ed Courses. (Outline slide indicates the next topic) Search for classes by subject. For this example, we will search by Course Subject. This will allow us to view all courses scheduled within an academic area for the specified term. Select the Course Subject drop down to begin the search. Select the desired subject from the menu. For this example we've select MATH as our Subject so that we can view a list of available math courses. However, we must enter at least two search items in order to perform a search. A good option here would be to specify a Course Career. The choices here include Undergraduate and Postbaccalaureate (i.e., graduate-level). In this case, the Undergraduate value has default so we will leave the existing value and perform a search for all undergraduate math classes. Leave all other criteria on this page as is. Doing so will ensure that you get a complete list of available classes. Select the Search button at the bottom of the page. If your search will return more than 50 results, you will receive a message asking if you would like to continue. Click the OK button to continue. The Class Search Results page will display. A key at the top of the Class Search Results page identifies the status icons used. One of the icons will display with each class listing to designate the Class Status. An Open Class will display a Green Dot. This status means the class has seats available for students to enroll. A Closed Class will display a Blue Square. This status means the class is either full or not currently available for registration. A Waitlist Class will display a Gold Triangle meaning that all available seats have been taken but there is still room on the wait list. Scroll down the page to view all search results meeting your criteria. When several classes are listed on the results page, it will default to a high-level view that displays each course title. Locate the class you are interested in and click the Expand Arrow button to the left. Upon clicking the expand button, a listing for each scheduled class section will display. For each section you will see a status icon, instructor and meeting information (days, times, location and details). From this page you can also click the Section link to view the Catalog description for a class as well as any enrollment requirements (e.g. requisites). Once you have completed your search you can either exit the page or click the Start a New Search button if you would like to begin another search. (Outline slide indicates the next topic) Search for GE classes. Students pursuing a bachelor's degree at Sac State must complete the required number of units in each of the specified General Education areas. Additionally, students are required to complete a minimum of 9 units of upper division General Education coursework. (See the Course Catalog for GE requirement details.) This portion of the tutorial will demonstrate how to search for General Education courses in specific GE areas and sub areas. In addition to searching within a particular GE area, we'll specify some additional criteria in this example. Let's search for upper division classes only. (Upper division classes have course numbers ranging from 100 to 199.) Click the Course Number drop down menu in the Class Search Criteria section. Note: This field will normally default to "is exactly". Select greater than or equal to option. Enter 100 in the Course Number text box next to the "greater than or equal to" setting. This will ensure that the search results contain only upper division classes. Additionally, we'll select the Show Open Classes Only checkbox. This option will limit our results to classes with seats currently available. Now let's specify a particular GE Area for our search. Click the GE Area drop down menu to select from areas A through E. Refer to the Catalog for an explanation of each GE Area. Select the desired GE area. For this example we will select Area C. If you would like to specify a Sub Area, you may select one by clicking on the GE Sub Area drop down menu. You can specify up to three sub areas at once. For this example we will select Sub Area C2. All other search criteria should be left as is. Selecting additional items will greatly reduce your search results. Click the Search button. The Class Search Results page will display a list of classes that match your search criteria. Click the Expand arrow next to a course title to view available sections. To search for GE courses in other areas, select the Start a New Search button. To return to your Student Center page, use the go to... drop down menu. You can return to the My Sac State Student Services tab by clicking the Home link in the navigation menu at the top, right. Please be sure to logout once you have finished using My Sac State.
