Campus Announcement

Subject:  Announcement of Campus Anti-Spam Solution
Date: Friday, April 16, 2004

Campus e-mail users will soon be able to access their e-mail without being overwhelmed by Spam.  IRT, as directed by Vice President of Academic Affairs and under the guidance of the Anti-Spam Workgroup, will implement an anti-Spam solution beginning Tuesday, April 20.  Campus users should experience a reduction in non-University related, unsolicited and sometimes offensive e-mail commonly referred to as Spam.

Starting April 20, all e-mail messages entering the campus will be scanned and rated by an anti-Spam device.  Messages that are not likely to be Spam will simply be delivered to the user’s mailbox.  Messages that MAY be Spam will be delivered to the user’s mailbox with the subject line prefaced by [BULK].  Messages that ARE identified as blatant Spam will not be delivered to the user’s mailbox.

No anti-Spam solution will stop 100% of unwanted messages without also preventing the delivery of valid e-mail messages.  To insure that valid messages are delivered, the anti-Spam device is configured to block blatant Spam and deliver suspected Spam.  The [BULK] tag on the subject line of suspected Spam can be used to distinguish between valid messages and probable Spam messages.

The Anti-Spam Workgroup has developed a Web page to provide more information about Spam and the anti-Spam solution.  To visit this site, point your browser to www.csus.edu/IRT/antispam.

If you have questions about the anti-Spam system, contact the Help Desk (helpdesk@csus.edu  or 916-278-7337), your campus ITC (www.csus.edu/IRT/helpdesk/itc.stm), or a member of the Anti-Spam Workgroup.
