 --Univ. of Washington Notifies 6,000 of Data Breach (April 1 & 3, 2009)
The University of Washington has notified more than 6000 employees that their personal information was compromised in a data security breach late last year.  Perpetrators managed to gain access to two University
Transportation Department servers containing the employees' names and Social Security numbers (SSNs).  The attacks began in early December 2008; the servers were taken offline on December 30 after a review revealed "obvious signs of compromise."  The university stopped using SSNs as unique identifiers in 2002, but the Transportation Department continued to use the numbers to process transactions.
