New Virus Protection for Home Computers – University License for MacAfee Ending, Alternative Software Available

As you know, the University is in the process of updating all campus-owned PC computers to the Microsoft Forefront anti-virus product, from the existing MacAfee anti-virus product.   At the same time, any home computers (PC or Apple) using university-licensed McAfee anti-virus must remove that software by December 31st and replace it with either Security Essentials (PC computers) or Sophos (Apple computers).  The good news is that this new home anti-virus protection is absolutely free to all faculty, staff, and students.  This is a significant benefit, since the University had to pay extra for home use of McAfee by faculty and staff and had no free option available to our students at all.  We encourage you to take action now to ensure your home anti-virus remains up-to-date.

If you have previously installed university-licensed McAfee anti-virus on a home computer:

1)   Type in www.csus.edu/virusupdate into your browser and follow the instructions appropriate to your computer to remove old McAfee software.

2)   At the same university website, click on the links to download the following free anti-virus software options:  Microsoft Security Essentials for the PC and Sophos for the Mac.

Caution: Do not remove the old anti-virus until you are ready to immediately update to the new.

If you don’t have university McAfee software and just want to take advantage of the new free anti-virus software:

1)   Type in www.csus.edu/virusupdate into your browser and follow the instructions appropriate to your computer to remove your old anti-virus software.

2)   At the same university website, click on the links to download the following free anti-virus software options:  Microsoft Security Essentials for the PC and Sophos for the Mac.

Caution: Do not remove the old anti-virus until you are ready to immediately update to the new.

For those who have problems with removal of the old university McAfee software on home computers, please call the Service Desk at 278-7337 for assistance.  While the campus is unable to provide direct support of other issues on non-university computers, the vendor websites for Security Essentials and Sophos have additional information that should be able to assist you if you run into problems.

If you have comments, questions or concerns, please send them to ITfeedback@csus.edu.
