Media Support - Distance Education - Student Assistant Level 3 position

Minimum Qualifications:

  • At least one semester experience with televised classes and highly-rated performacne evaluations.
  • Excellent English verbal communication and writing skills.
  • Responsible and dependable.
  • Ability to work well with various people including students, faculty, staff, and high-level administrators.
  • Motivated, innovative, and shows initiative.
  • Proficiency with multiple computer platforms and operating systems (e.g. UNIX, MacIntosh, PC, Win 95/98/NT/2000/ME/XP, MacOS 9.x and 10.x).
  • Proficiency with SacLink applications (e.g. OWA) and Saclink utilities.
  • Proficiency with communication software and internet applications (e.g. Web browsers, FTP, encoding software)
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access programs

Duties and Responsibilities:

This position heavily focuses on daily operations, live streaming and archiving classes. The student assistant works closely with the Distance and Distributed Education network analyst implementing programs, policies, procedures and standards. The student assistant should have a thorough knowledge of different encoding formats. The student assistant works with minimum direct supervision. This position is expected to work from 15 to 20 hours per week during the academic semester and up to 40 hours per week during intersession and Summer Session.  Duties of the Student Assistant include, but may not be limited to:

  • Produce, capture, digitize and encode various types of media files.
  • Maintain day to day functions of live and archive streams. Use Helix Producer, Windows Media to encode and archive distance classes and special events held by Sacramento State University.
  • Create, manage, schedule, and maintain batch files for all distance classes.
  • Create and distribute Streaming Schedule for each semester.
  • Post distance classes onto Media servers in a timely fashion.  Make sure all of the classes get posted.  Correct any problems if there are missing/corrupt files.
  • Ensure that archiving maintenance is accurate and current, and update procedural manuals for processes involving setting up equipment, encoding files, and maintaining servers and computers.
  • Update PCs and servers using Windows Update, as well as Custom Software/Hardware updates.  Download and install necessary programs.
  • Duties related to supervising student assistants and providing help if necessary.
  • Maintain inventory of office supplies, equipment, and tools.
  • Compose and Edit Studio Drawings for Video and Audio Layouts.
  • Help put together Broadcasting Studios; wire equipment, test devices, troubleshoot machines.
  • Work with mechanical equipment in producing special, custom-made products.
  • Clean and maintain working space and conditions.
