Campus Systems Restored

Issue Lifecycle: Resolved

Down time start: Wednesday, May 22nd, 2013, 3:30 AM

System restore time: Wednesday, May 22nd, 2013, 3:30 AM

Campus systems were unavailable for a period of time between 10:05 and 10:25 am today due to an issue with authentication, or login, services.  The root cause of the issue has been identified.  As you may know, the campus uses the Lightweight Active Directory Protocol (LDAP) as part of our authentication services.  Our campus load balancer, which is used to manage access to campus systems, uses the “ping” service to reach the LDAP servers.  A routine configuration change to an unrelated Windows server caused the ping service between these components to be disabled. As the configuration was not made to either the LDAP servers or the load balancer, we did not anticipate this occurring.  Once the issue was reported, we adjusted the configuration, which resolved the issue. This problem only affected MySacState and the services provided through it.  Desktop, mobile and other types of authentication services were available to all employees and students during this time. We will be reviewing this event to safeguards against such occurrences, including reaching out to Microsoft to see why this change impacted servers that were not explicitly included in it’s scope, and considering minimizing even minor configuration changes in critical times.

Some users are reporting a problem when IE10 us used with CMS or Sac Send.  In CMS, users report the “spinning wheel” that appears during the download of a screen continues after the screen is loaded.  In Sac Send, users report the email does not stop “sending”.  These problems are related to latest version of Internet Explorer – IE10.  As a work around, users can either use a different browser or revert to the previous version of Internet Explorer.   To revert back to IE9, please contact the Service Desk at 916.278.7337 between 8-5, M-F.
