Last week we notified you about an issue with some Sac State email accounts, including yours. We have made some changes to My Sac State that will make it easier for you to find new email. Instead of having to login to your email in two separate places, you can find the email in both your accounts by logging into My Sac State.
Here is how to find both of your email accounts from within My Sac State
Go to my.csus.edu and log in with your Sac State Username and Password. Once logged in, go to the SacLink Email Channel. Within this channel you will see a preview of your Sac State Email inbox.
1. Check your two campus mailboxes by clicking on Inbox Link or the View Second Inbox Link in My Sac State.
2. Each time you click on one of the Inbox links, it will open a new tab in your browser. You can go to each inbox and back to My Sac State by clicking on the corresponding tab.
Again, we are continuing to work on a solution for this problem so we can restore normal operation of your Sac State email. Meanwhile, no email is lost and your email is being sent and received. We offer our apologies for the inconvenience. We will notify you when the problem is fixed.
If you have questions, please contact the IRT Service Desk at (916) 278-7337.

IRT will be performing planned security certificate maintenance on Tuesday, November 12, 2013 at 5:30 a.m. and the weekend of November 15 and 16, 2013. The current security certificate used by our campus-wide single sign-on service, is expiring on 11/15/13. We expect the changes made will have no effect on use of central IT services, but have provided contact information below in case of any issues.
What is a security Certificate, and why would I care? A certificate is a standard security technology for establishing an encrypted link between a server and a client—typically a web server (website) and a browser; or a mail server and a mail client (e.g., Outlook). It is there to keep others from “eavesdropping” – in other words from intercepting and seeing or using your data.
When is the change, and what does it mean to me? On Tuesday, November 12, 2013, at approximately 5:30 a.m. the certificate used by our campus-wide single sign-on service, SacAuth, will be renewed. Other Certificate changes will occur over the weekend, beginning Nov. 15th. The SacAuth certificate renewal may have a critical effect on the ability of client systems (for instance Exchange eMail, library systems, Portal (My Sac State login), CMS login, etc.) to authenticate properly. Therefore, systems owners both inside and outside IRT have been notified so that they can correctly install the new certificate to ensure smooth and continuous operation. We expect that system owners will install the new certificates and therefore the change will be transparent to users. However, if you do see a message asking if you will accept a new certificate, simply accept the certificate when prompted (e.g., click on Yes, OK, Accept). If you experience a problem accessing an application or service during the week, please contact the service desk at (916) 278-7337. If you have issues over the weekend of the 16th and 17th when the service desk is closed, please call (916) 278-7622.
If you have any questions about this change, please call the IRT Service Desk at 278-7337. Any questions, concerns or other comments may be sent to ITfeedback@csus.edu.

On Friday morning, October 4, 2013 the certificate that validates your access to the campus wireless network will be upgraded to new and required security standards. This update may result in your being asked to accept the new security certificate before you can proceed to access our campus wireless network.
If you wish to prepare in advance for this required change for wireless access, please simply go to http://www.csus.edu/irt/wireless/instructions.html and select "Automatic Setup". This will install the new certificate ahead of time, allowing you to not be affected by Friday's change. If you do not set up your device in advance, you can simply accept the certificate when prompted (e.g., click on Yes, OK, Accept) and you will then be able to use the campus wireless network.
If you have any difficulties, please visit the wireless FAQs at http://www.csus.edu/irt/FAQ/internet-network-and-communications/Wireless-Internet or contact the IRT Service Desk at AIRC 2005 or 916.278.7337. As always, comments or questions can be referred at any time to email@example.com.
**Note: If you do not have administrative rights to your work computer that attaches to our wireless network you will likely not be able to accept the new certificate without assistance. Please check with your department IT resource or the IRT Service Desk for information on how to proceed.
Certificates validate your access to campus IT servers over the campus network; by updating this certificate we are providing you with the most up to date security for protecting your private information. For the technically curious… What are Digital Certificates?

In order to perform yearly maintenance on key systems, IRT is planning a shutdown of the CSU Sacramento data center during the summer. This outage will affect most campus technology services. Our planned date and time for this maintenance is Saturday, July 27th from 6:00am to 7:00pm. There is no good time to shut down systems for maintenance, but we try to pick the lowest usage times twice a year, once in summer and once during winter break, to do this work. We ask that you keep this in mind when planning any summer activity or class.

Below is a phishing attempt that targeted the Sac State community on Saturday. A number of accounts were compromised and used to produce large volumes of spam mail. As a result, a number of large service providers have temporarily “black listed” csus.edu as a source of spam and delivery of emails sent from Sac State accounts may be temporarily delayed until Sac State is cleared off of these black lists.
If you receive an email like the one below do not click any links and delete the message immediately. Please report all potential phishing emails to firstname.lastname@example.org or contact the IRT Service Desk at 916.278.7337.

The Sac State email system was the subject of a Phishing attack over the weekend. Some email accounts were compromised and this led to subsequent attacks. These attacks resulted in our campus email system being blocked by email providers on the Internet. This means that SacState was "black-listed" as an at-risk sender. Incoming and outgoing email was blocked, though internal email was not affected. Our status has improved since Monday and we expect to be fully removed from blocked lists soon.
We have taken corrective measures and are currently sending and receiving email as normal, however there might be occasional delays in sending email.
During a large scale phishing attack this weekend, a number of campus email account users provided account information which allowed hackers to use their CSUS email accounts to send out many spam messages. Because of the large amount of spam therefore originating from campus accounts, a number of external email providers have blocked email coming from the entire csus.edu 'domain'. The result is that some email sent from campus via external email provider accounts (e.g. Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo mail) may experience a delay reaching destinations outside the university. Internal CSUS Outlook email will send and receive as normal. We are currently working with these external email providers to release outgoing email.

Campus systems were unavailable for a period of time between 10:05 and 10:25 am today due to an issue with authentication, or login, services. The root cause of the issue has been identified. As you may know, the campus uses the Lightweight Active Directory Protocol (LDAP) as part of our authentication services. Our campus load balancer, which is used to manage access to campus systems, uses the “ping” service to reach the LDAP servers. A routine configuration change to an unrelated Windows server caused the ping service between these components to be disabled. As the configuration was not made to either the LDAP servers or the load balancer, we did not anticipate this occurring. Once the issue was reported, we adjusted the configuration, which resolved the issue. This problem only affected MySacState and the services provided through it. Desktop, mobile and other types of authentication services were available to all employees and students during this time. We will be reviewing this event to safeguards against such occurrences, including reaching out to Microsoft to see why this change impacted servers that were not explicitly included in it’s scope, and considering minimizing even minor configuration changes in critical times.

Some users are reporting a problem when IE10 us used with CMS or Sac Send. In CMS, users report the “spinning wheel” that appears during the download of a screen continues after the screen is loaded. In Sac Send, users report the email does not stop “sending”. These problems are related to latest version of Internet Explorer – IE10. As a work around, users can either use a different browser or revert to the previous version of Internet Explorer. To revert back to IE9, please contact the Service Desk at 916.278.7337 between 8-5, M-F.
