Planned Security Certificate Maintenance

IRT will be performing planned security certificate maintenance on Tuesday, November 12, 2013 at 5:30 a.m.  and the weekend of November 15 and 16, 2013.  The current security certificate used by our campus-wide single sign-on service, is expiring on 11/15/13.  We expect the changes made will have no effect on use of central IT services, but have provided contact  information below in case of any issues.

What is a security Certificate, and why would I care?  A certificate is a standard security technology for establishing an encrypted link between a server and a client—typically a web server (website) and a browser; or a mail server and a mail client (e.g., Outlook).  It is there to keep others from “eavesdropping” – in other words from intercepting and seeing or using your data. 

When is the change, and what does it mean to me?  On Tuesday, November 12, 2013, at approximately 5:30 a.m. the certificate used by our campus-wide single sign-on service, SacAuth, will be renewed. Other Certificate changes will occur over the weekend, beginning Nov. 15th.  The SacAuth certificate renewal may have a critical effect on the ability of client systems (for instance Exchange eMail, library systems, Portal (My Sac State login), CMS login, etc.) to authenticate properly.  Therefore, systems owners both inside and outside IRT have been notified so that they can correctly install the new certificate to ensure smooth and continuous operation. We expect that system owners will install the new certificates and therefore the change will be transparent to users.  However, if you do see a message asking if you will accept a new certificate, simply accept the certificate when prompted (e.g., click on Yes, OK, Accept). If you experience a problem accessing an application or service during the week, please contact the service desk at (916) 278-7337.  If you have issues over the weekend of the 16th and 17th when the service desk is closed, please call (916) 278-7622.
