Placement Exams

The ELM and EPT Placement exams are taken after the student is admitted and before the student registers. The student can sign up for these exams on line at the Testing Center. The student cannot register until these tests are conpleted and recorded on the University information system. This process can take up to five weeks after the exams are taken. Please allow enough time for this processing.

English Placement Test(EPT)

The EPT is used to determine whether the student is prepared for GE level English. If the student does not pass this exam, the student will be required to take up to a year of additional course work. This additional course work does not count towards a degree.

Elementary Level Math(ELM) Exam

The ELM is used to determine whether the student is prepared for GE level Math. If the student does not pass this exam, the student will be required to take up to a year of additional course work. This additional course work does not count towards a degree.

English Diagnostic Test(EDT)

All undergraduate international students (on visa) and permanent residents (green card holders) from non-English speaking countries must take both the EPT (unless exempt) and the EDT.

If they take the EPT at another California State University campus, they must also take the EDT.  All other native speakers of languages other than English are encouraged to take the EDT as well.  The EDT will determine placement in the most appropriate multilingual course for each student and will determine which students are eligible for the multilingual administration of the Writing Proficiency Exam. Until this test requirement is met, international students and permanent residents will not be allowed to register for any classes, including multilingual classes.  Students will be placed in the appropriate course sequence according to their score on the English Diagnostic Test.

If you are required to take a multilingual course and do not register for the prescribed course during your first semester on campus, you may not be able to enroll in the next semester. To register for the EDT or to obtain additional information about this test and test dates, contact the Learning Skills Center in Lassen Hall 2200 at 916-278-6725.
