Literacy and Culture: Problems and Promises
of Bilingual Education - May 9, 1996
We want the future to hold good jobs, loving
families and citizen participation for all our children. And we know that in
this society, being literate and speaking English will help lead to that future.
We also know that many students talk with their families about love, work, and
respect in a language other than English--one their family brought to this country.
Can students achieve this vision of the future when they speak one language
at home and another in school? Will keeping the native language alive help or
hinder the student who is learning English? These are the questions that will
be discussed at this Town Hall Meeting.
