College Admission Policies: Gateway or Barrier to the Future?
- May 7, 1998
Who should go to college? Any qualified student who wants to, right? But what
if our colleges and universities do not have enough room to accept every qualified
student? And what about those students who cannot afford to attend? What if
the college admissions tests we use don't do a good job of distinguishing between
those who are qualified and those who are not? What if members of some ethnic
and racial groups are admitted in disproportionate numbers? How do we decide
who goes and who doesn't?
The answers to these difficult questions are determined largely by the higher
education policies established by our elected representatives. At this LegiSchool
Town Hall Meeting, you will have a chance to discuss these issues with statewide
legislators and to tell them what policies you think make the most sense.
