Mature Subject Material or
Language Guidelines

The Lenaea High School Theatre Festival welcomes all high school entries who have an understanding and intention to present and receive feedback on theatre performances within a safe, educational environment. It does not, however, function as a censoring agency for any of its participants.Instead, we ask that each of the Program Directors be responsible for identifying material that in any way falls under the realm of questionably mature subject material or language.

The Lenaea High School Theatre Festival defines “mature” subject material, language or stage business as any use of profanity, sexually explicit, suggestive, or abusive situations within the performance.

*Hint: if there is a question as to whether or not your performance material falls into this category, it more than likely does, so please err on the side of caution when making these determinations. If a production contains subject material, stage business or language that might not be appropriate for a general audience, the following must take place:

  1. Check Yes on Registration form(s) when prompted to indicate if school is bringing mature subject material.
  2. If a Program is provided by the school, director must add a disclaimer to his/her one act program page.
  3. Program Directors or school representatives must notify the Host or Room Respondent prior to any performances that contain any mature subject material, language, or stage business so that a pre-performance announcement can be made. Checking the registration is not sufficient notification in this regard.
We thank you very much for your cooperation in this matter.
