unless your question is advisor specific. Kay
Moore, Director Kay Moore was an
elementary classroom teacher for ten years before
coming to CSUS. She had the honor of being El
Dorado County's first "Teacher of the Year."
Joining the Teacher Education Department of CSUS in
1987, she has taught credential classes in literacy
and social studies and undergraduate and graduate
classes in juvenile literature. Kay has supervised
student teachers in many local school districts,
coordinated student teaching centers, and
administered the Blended Elementary Teacher
Education Program (BETEP) for the College of
Education. Kay is the author
of two juvenile books, If You Lived at the Time
of the Civil War and If You Lived at the
Time of the American Revolution (published by
Scholastic). In addition to writing, she enjoys
reading (especially mysteries) and watching her
son, Bryan, play basketball. She enjoys working
with students and looks forward to welcoming you to
the Liberal Studies Program! Advisors/Staff Kristen Anderegg Kristen Anderegg
first joined the Liberal Studies Program in 1993
while she was an undergraduate at CSUS and rejoined
in 1995 after receiving her BA. Kristen received
her MS in Counseling with an emphasis in school
counseling and her PPS credential from CSUS in 1998
and is currently the lead advisor in the
Liberal Studies Program. Kristen considers herself a
professional student and, although through with her
degree program, continues to take courses at CSUS
and American River College. In addition to
concerts, road trips and her cat Ziggy and French lop Coco,
some of her spare time is spent volunteering at the Sacramento
Zoo. Kristen looks forward to commencement ceremonies
each semester where she delights in seeing Liberal Studies
students graduate and move onto credential programs. Melanie Loo Melanie Loo was
born in Honolulu, Hawaii. Melanie attended the
University of Hawaii for two years before
transferring to UCDavis where she completed her BA
in Biology and BS in Genetics. She received her
Ph.D. in Genetics from the University of
Washington. Melanie has been teaching at CSUS since
1977 in the Department of Biological Sciences. Her
courses include genetics for majors and non-majors,
and Bio 108 (Investigations in Biology, a Liberal
Studies core requirement. Melanie started advising
Liberal Studies majors in 1990 and enjoys providing
all the support she can to students preparing to
teach in elementary schools. Education in general
and science education in particular are activities
she values most highly. You can also find Melanie
teaching a course for Liberal Studies majors, ID
196J, where she takes Liberal Studies students into
the classroom and they teach science activities to
elementary school children. Nadeen Ruiz Gary Shannon Gary Shannon
started graduate school at UC Berkeley in the
mid-1970s and then quit because he didn't know what
he was doing. After a variety of experiences (the
safer ones involving religion, motorcycles,
Springsteen, donut making and baking) he moved to
Grass Valley, met his wife, was married and became
a father. He completed his Ph.D. at the University
of California, Davis. He has had the good fortune
of being at CSU, Sacramento since 1986, where he
now endeavors to teach some of what little he
understands - including the belief that mathematics
is beautiful. Gary has been an advisor with the
Liberal Studies Program since 1989 and has also
served in the role of coordinator.
Ka Va Susan Wanlass Susan Wanlass, a
professor in the English Department, has been a
Liberal Studies advisor since 1988 and has
also served twice as Liberal Studies Coordinator.
She enjoys the friendly, one-on-one contact with
students and finds Liberal Studies majors a
pleasure to work with. She also regularly teaches
two Liberal Studies classes in the English
Department: English 16 (The Structure of English)
and English 116B (Children's Literary Classics), as
well as other pedagogical classes and American
literature classes. She says that helping to
prepare future teachers gives her particular
satisfaction! Advisors
Emeritus . Lu Agosta Lu Agosta was born
outside of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He received a BA
at LSU and MA and Ph.D. degrees at the University
of Texas, Austin. He taught Children's Literature
and Applied Linguistics courses for ten years at
Kansas State before coming to CSUS in 1987 to teach
similar courses in the English department. He
particularly likes the energy of the lively
classroom exchanges with Liberal Studies majors,
and he enjoys working with prospective teachers as
advisor. Tim Hallinan Tim Hallinan is a
Midwesterner by birth and upbringing, a Californian
by adoption and tenure. His likes are simple and
single-syllable: cats, dogs, trees, rocks, books,
and maps. Both antique atlases and contemporary
computers keep him supplied with the maps he dearly
loves. He not only uses maps in his courses but his
Liberal Studies office was decorated wall-to-wall
with them! Tim continues to teach geography
classes, including GEOG 100, a Liberal Studies core
requirement. After 30 years at CSUS Tim has retired
to half-time (to the dismay of his students and
Liberal Studies colleagues!). Roberta Gehrmann Charles Nelson Charles Nelson is a
native Oklahoman who was born in Altus, Oklahoma,
graduated from Lawton, Oklahoma High School, and
completed his BA, MA and Ph.D. (in English) from
the University of Oklahoma in Norman. Charles came
to California with his wife and family, joining the
English Department faculty at CSUS in September,
1966 - a long time ago! Charles first served as a
Liberal Studies advisor in 1985 - 87, then returned
as a Liberal Studies advisor in 1991 until his
retirement in spring 2003. Charles especially
enjoyed meeting and advising Liberal Studies majors
and believes that such advising is very important
in assisting them in successfully completing their
program. Judith Ng Ed Shea Ed Shea was born in Portland,
Oregon in 1955. He received his BS in 1977 from Southern
Oregon State College and his Ph.D. from Oregon State
University in 1990. Ed taught high school math in Portland
from 1977 to 1983. He came to the CSUS Mathematics and
Statistics Department in 1990 and to Liberal Studies in 1995. Jean Torcom Jean Torcom joined
the CSU Sacramento faculty in 1970 as a member of
the Government Department, teaching courses in
American Political Institutions, such as the
Congress and the American Presidency. She hails
originally from suburban Chicago - Park Ridge. She
completed her undergraduate degree at Colorado
College and her M.A. and Ph.D. in political science
at Johns Hopkins University. After spending the
latter part of the 1960s working for a member of
the House of Representatives, she came west to
teach. Professor Torcom served thirteen years as
chair of the Government Department before becoming
director of the Liberal Studies Program from 1998
through August 2002. She is now splitting her time
between coordinating the internship program in
government and advising liberal studies and
government students. Len Wycosky Len is a full-time
counselor with the Education Opportunity Program at
CSUS. He has also been affiliated with Liberal
Studies for the past 7 years. He has two masters
degrees, one in Sociology and another in Marriage
and Family Therapy. For leisure he enjoys almost
all outdoor sports. Staff/Student Assistant
Alumni Christina Andrade When she was a
child Christina Andrade didn't play "house", she
played "school". She recruited neighborhood
children, cousins and friends to play students
while she played the teacher. With the dream of
becoming an elementary school teacher in mind,
Christina transferred to CSUS from San Joaquin
Delta College in Stockton, California, as a Liberal
Studies major in Fall 2000. By the time she began
her first semester at CSUS, she had her entire
college career mapped out and a cushy job with
Liberal Studies! During Christina's first semester
at CSUS, she pledged Alpha Chi Omega sorority where
she serves as the Vice President for Intellectual
Development. In this office she promotes education,
encourages members to raise their grades and awards
members for academic achievements. Having made such
a good impression on her colleagues, she was
recommended as an orientation leader and during the
summer months and November Christina guides daily
groups of freshmen, transfer students and their
parents through general education, graduation
requirements and campus life. Nobody in the Liberal
Studies believes her when she says she has free
time but when her busy schedule allows, she enjoys
spending it with her friends and visiting her
family in Stockton. She enjoys traveling and is
currently planning a spring break cruise to Mexico
with friends. Sharon Blevins Elissa
Fenstermacher Elissa was born and raised in
San Francisco where she dreamed of becoming a teacher. With
that dream in mind, she transferred to CSUS as a Liberal
Studies major in Fall 1995. When she arrived, Elissa quickly
got a part-time job on campus. Fortunately for all of us in
the Liberal Studies office, Kristen "stole" Elissa from CEWAER
and she came to work for the Liberal Studies Program in the
Fall of 1996, and has been our office assistant ever since. In
addition to her full-time studies and demanding part-time job,
Elissa was on the CSUS rowing team for 2 years, participating
in numerous intercollegiate competitions. Likewise, Elissa
found time to volunteer for the local Sacramento 20/30 chapter
and a local autism organization while also working for St.
Mary's K-8 school as an extension leader. She tutored an
autistic child through a grant and served in two separate
offices for her sorority, Alpha Chi Omega. As the time
approached for Elissa to begin a teaching credential program,
we struggled with the conviction that she will make a
phenomenal teacher and the inevitable fate that the Liberal
Studies Program will lose an exceptional associate. Elissa has
brought much to our staff, faculty and students and she
continues to be a reliable and hard-working member of the
Liberal Studies staff even in the first phase of her
credential program. Elissa was awarded the APLE award last
semester. Ryan
Holoubek,
Liberal Studies student assistent Ryan Holoubek
transferred to CSUS in fall 2002 from Sacramento
City and Cosumnes River College (where she received
her AA in General Education in 1999) as a Liberal
Studies Blended Elementary Teacher Education
Program (BETEP) major. Soon after Ryan transferred
to CSUS she was hired as a Liberal Studies Program
student assistant. In addition to working in the
Liberal Studies Program office since Spring 2003,
Ryan has worked for the Academic Advising Office as
a Peer Mentor to first semester freshmen. She has
recently been hired as an Orientation Leader for
summer orientation 2004. Ryan is a very
independent and hard working individual. While
going to school Ryan has worked at various retail
establishments as well as a local credit union -
you name it and she's probably worked there! Along
with full-time Liberal Studies and credential
studies, her multiple jobs with the Liberal Studies
Program, Academic Advising and Orientation, Ryan
enjoys spending time with her boyfriend, Brian, and
their cat Waffles, as well as cross-stitching,
needlepoint and other crafts. Ryan also had the
distinct honor of winning 1st place in the
University Staff Assembly Pumpkin Carving.
Ryan is currently teaching middle school
science in the Buckeye School District and loving every minute
of it. Lisa
Roenfeldt Lisa joined the
team in September 2001. As an Air Force "brat" she
moved around a bit and spent 8 years growing up in
Hawaii. She's made a home in Sacramento and earned
her Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from CSUS in
1996. While attending classes she gained her first
on-campus employment experience as a student
assistant in the Government Department. After
graduation, Lisa spent a number of years employed
in the social services field working in foster care
and residential treatment. Lisa enjoyed her campus
experience so much she decided to head back to
CSUS. In her spare time Lisa enjoys reading,
exercise, gardening, spending time with family and
traveling. Lisa is currently
working on an MA in Higher Education Leadership in
the College of Education! Lisa, Brian and Bryce have relocated to
Colorado Springs, Colorado as of February 2007. We all
wish the Roenfeldt family the best! |
