Probation/Disqualification in the Liberal Studies Program
*Academic Probation: Status of a student whose GPA (semester, cumulative CSUS or overall) falls
below 2.0
*Academic Disqualification: Students on probation become disqualified:
· if they earn a semester GPA below 2.0 and have a CSUS GPA or overall
GPA below 2.0
· Earn a 2.0 in a current semester, but have a CSUS or overall grade point deficiency in excess of class level limits (see CSUS catalog, p. 110)
When you are placed on Academic Probation, you will
receive a letter from the Liberal Studies program which states that you must
make an appointment with a program advisor by a specified date. Come to the
You will receive a letter from the University telling you that you have been disqualified. You are not eligible to enroll in classes unless you are reinstated. The Liberal Studies program will only reinstate a student once. If you have not been reinstated previously, call the ACTM (916-278-6342) and make an appointment to meet with the Director of the Liberal Studies program. The Director will meet with you and discuss your situation. Be sure to complete the University’s paperwork for reinstatement and bring it with you to the appointment.
If you have been disqualified and reinstated by the Liberal Studies program previously, you cannot be reinstated as a Liberal Studies major again. If you wish to continue at CSUS, you have several options: 1) you apply for reinstatement in a major other than Liberal Studies; or 2) if you wish to try to work yourself back into good standing with the Liberal Studies program, you can apply for reinstatement through the Liberal Studies program as an Undeclared major. Make an appointment (278-6342) and bring all of the completed reinstatement paperwork (including the GE evaluation you obtain from Academic Advising, LSN 1012) with you to that meeting. You should understand that, while it is possible to be admitted to a teacher credential program with a BA in a major other than Liberal Studies, you must pass the California Subject Examination for Teachers (CSET) with any major. Passing the CSET can be more difficult without the subject matter knowledge gained through completing the liberal studies major. In addition to the CSET, you must have at least a 2.67 GPA for the CSU credential programs. Students needing help exploring other majors are encouraged to visit the Academic Advising Center (Lassen 1012) and the Career Center (Lassen 2000).
