THE CALIFORNIA LESSON STUDY CONFERENCE brings together teachers, researchers, administrators, and policy makers interested in the powerful and transformative educational practice of lesson study. The California Lesson Study Conference goal is to provide an engaging forum for lesson study teams and researchers to share their work, for administrators and teachers to learn about the process of lesson study, and for policy-makers to think about the possibilities of lesson study as a tool for building collaborative professional communities, improving instruction, and increasing student achievement. Conference strands include:

      - Elementary mathematics
      - Elementary science
      - Secondary mathematics
      - Secondary science
      - Other academic subjects
      - Introduction to lesson study
      - Research on lesson study
      - Managing lesson study programs
      - Administrators and lesson study

Proposals may be submitted either by individuals or groups. Program organizers may request permission to link your proposal with another to comprise a common theme for a single session. The registration fee will be waived for one presenter per session and presenters are encouraged to stay for the duration of the conference to share their expertise. All submissions should be e-mailed to mase@csus.edu. Presenters will be notified of acceptance by May 12, 2009. Lodging will be available for presenters and participants at Asilomar Conference Center.

Presentations by Lesson Study Teams, Administrators or Professional Developers or Research Reports:
Proposals due April 30, 2009
Choose from a 30 or 60 minute format.


Teacher teams from all grades and subject areas have an opportunity to share lessons as well as insights gained through lesson study. 30 minute presentations may include discussion of the planning process, the research lesson, and lesson revisions. Longer presentations may involve participants in experiencing part of the lesson.

Administrators and professional developers have the opportunity to share their experience in initiating, supporting and sustaining lesson study programs.

We invite presentations from researchers currently involved with projects related to lesson study. Areas of interest include (and are not limited to):

      - Characterizations and impact of lesson study
      - Variations on the lesson study process
      - Whole school or departmental reform
      - Student outcomes
      - Teacher content knowledge
      - Establishing lesson study as a systemic reform

Proposal: Use the online form to submit a short summary of your presentation. One team member will act as team leader, serving as contact person for the group. The presentation may be made by one or more representatives from the team, or the entire team. Research presenters use the online form to submit an abstract along with a 2-3 page proposal describing your project or research. We encourage submission of full papers for inclusion in conference proceedings. Papers must be received electronically by May 29th, for inclusion in conference proceedings.
