FACULTY

The National Science Foundation funded a proposal by Dr. David Covin (IA and Government Professor) and Dr. K.C. Morrison, from the University of Missouri, Columbia, for a planning meeting to develop a proposal for an international workshop on the collaborative, cross-national study of race and politics in the U.S. and Brazil. They went in January and had a very productive series of meetings with Brazilian scholars at the Federal University of Bahia in Salvador, Brazil.

Nancy Shulock (PPA Professor and Associate VP of Academic Affairs) has agreed, at the last minute, to teach PPA 240 in the downtown cohort program (due to Anne Cowden's cancellation). She is very excited about taking the program off-campus and about trying out the alternative, compressed schedule. As a result of this unscheduled assignment, she will not be teaching PPA 240 in Fall, 1999. (Rumor has it that our Department Chair, Bob Waste, will teach the course in the Fall.)

Also, Dr. Shulock's article, entitled "The Paradox of Policy Analysis: If it's not Used, Why do we Produce so Much of it?" was just published in the current issue of the Journal of Policy Analysis and Management (JPAM)

Dr. Cristy Jensen was part of a panel on the CSU Baccalaureate Degree in the 21st Century at the National Conference of American Higher Education in Washington DC on March 25. During the time in Washington she welcomed a delegation from Kaluga which has been working on establishing conflict mediation centers in Russia. The group met with officials at the World Bank, the Eurasia Foundation, and the International City Managers' Association to talk about an expansion of their work in implementing the new bankruptcy laws. The group then came to Sacramento where they met with local conflict mediation center personnel and the , and observed a business arbitration.

A new cohort of PPA students recently completed PPA 200 at the Downtown RCE Center. Cristy Jensen taught the first course-- Nancy Shulock will be teaching the PPA 240 beginning in a few weeks.
