DIRECTOR'S CORNER

Happy Thanksgiving holidays everybody! We have lots to be thankful in both the IA and PPA program this season. Two changes are particularly welcome, and particularly important to note.

  • In the PPA program, we are introducing a new Health Policy elective, PPA 296F Health Policy & Administration (Thursday, 6-8:50), taught by a prominent capitol area health policy professional. We are very excited about this new program elective, and urge you to sign up for this course (and all your courses) early to insure that you land a seat in the class. The 296F course is a great Thursday night choice for students who need an elective and who have already completed the 220B course (Rob Wassmer's Applied Economic Analysis II course). Students who have to choose between these two Thursday night courses, should take the core 220B course this semester, and the health policy elective later in their program.
  • IA also has a welcome program change. Beginning in the Spring Semester, Professor Maria Sampanis will be teaching the thesis course, IA 500. All students registered for 500 and working on their theses, will meet with Maria several times during the semester in a structured classroom setting. Instead of doing a thesis on your own, and working with one or more professors across campus, you will be turning in your thesis prospectus and early chapters to Maria (then to your other thesis committee members) during the Spring semester. The course will meet about once a month during the semester and have structured deadlines (and lots of help and encouragement from Maria) for completing your thesis. Maria will be teaching the 500 course every semester for the IA program. We are very excited about the new level of support for completing theses that this brings to the IA program.

Remember, sign up for IA 500, PPA 296F, and all your IA and PPA courses early. This insures that you get a seat in the course, and helps us know how many students wish to enroll in each of our courses.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!

Bob Waste
IA And PPA Director

P.S. Please keep sending in those e-mails, letters and phone calls suggesting new courses in the IA and PPA programs. I have received a number of good suggestions that the faculty will be considering this year but we can always use more good ideas. Thanks & keep up the good work.
