Peter Detwiler, PPA, has been on the speaking circuit. He gave the keynote speech, "Creating The New California" to the 3rd Annual Monterey County Economic Strategy Forum on October 30th. Detwiler sketched three alternative scenarios for the 250 participants, challenging them to focus their efforts on livable communities and affordable housing. Detwiler also made a panel presentation on the "Policy Implications of Changing Demography" at the Regional Conference of the American Society for Public Administration (ASPA) on the campus of the University of Southern California. State Librarian Kevin Starr moderated the ASPA panel in Los Angeles. Following the recent statewide elections, Detwiler spoke on "Politics, Policies, and Public Finance" to the California Association Municipal Finance Officers training program here in Sacramento on November 12. He said that it was "fun being a political pundit," just like his faculty colleague Tim Hodson.
Rob Wassmer, Graduate Program in Public Policy and Administration, on October 27 participated in a news conference with Senator Barbara Boxer and State Controller Kathleen Connell that discussed Matt Fong's proposal for a flat personal income tax at the federal level. On November 10, 1998 he participated in a roundtable discussion on "Cites and Policy Advice" at the 91st Annual Meeting of the National Tax Association in Austin, Texas.
Cristy Jensen, PPA, is co chair of the Statewide CSU Academic Conference in Asilomar November 18-20. The conference will be attended by 130 including members of the Board of Trustees, Campus Presidents, Provosts, and campus faculty and student leaders. The topic is: "Improving Access and Assuring Quality for the Student of the 21st Century". Dr. Jensen will be leading a discussion of strengthening articulation and transfer pathways for undergraduate students in the CSU. She will present a paper at the American Association of Higher Education Faculty Roles and Rewards Conference in San Diego in January on a CSUS panel with Dean Joseph Sheley, Associate VP Brown and Provost Koester.
