DIRECTOR'S CORNER

Welcome back for another great semester in the International Affairs and Public Policy and Administration graduate programs! I wanted to take a brief moment to let you know about some changes that we have made this year and changes we are making for the coming academic year.

First, International Affairs students should note that we have changed the procedures for IA 500, the thesis course. In the past, students "enrolled" in IA 500 while working on their thesis but there was no official class to attend, no assigned teacher, and no set class attendance hours. This independent study approach to thesis writing worked well for some students, and not well for others. In order to provide more structure and support, clear deadlines, and an instructor in common to all students working on a thesis in the same semester, we have assigned Professor Maria Sampanis to teach IA 500. The class meets several times a semester, currently in a great room in the University Union. Since many of you have taken the popular Foreign Policy course (IA 212) you will be familiar with Professor Sampanis, and know that you can look forward to enrolling in IA 500 with Dr. Sampanis, who with a book of her own due to be published soon, is, herself, an accomplished researcher and writer.

Secondly, for PPA students, there are several electives to choose from next year and it's not too soon to begin thinking about which courses best fit your thesis needs and personal interests. In the
Fall '99 semester, electives will be PPA 250 land Use & Planning, PPA 251 Urban Economics & Policy, PPA 296F Health Policy & Administration, and PPA 296G/ENVS 296 Environmental Policy. Spring electives include: PPA 284/GOVT 284 Urban Politics & Policy, and PPA 260 Working with Legislatures.

Finally, when the new course schedule comes out in the near future it will have an annual or one year schedule for the first time, instead of just detailing the courses coming up in the next semester. The one year schedule should help all PPA and IA graduate students to better plan for the coming 99-2000 Academic Year. Once you get used to the new schedule I think that you'll really appreciate the advance notice that the one year schedule gives you.

Enjoy the semester! IA students, let me know how our new IA 500 thesis course is working out as you work on your thesis. I think that you are going to really like the new, more structured IA 500 approach. PPA students, have fun "shopping" for electives this coming Fall and Spring semesters. I hope you notice that we have doubled the number of electives in the PPA program, adding some real depth and strength in the areas of urban and local policy, state policy, health policy, and environmental policy. Have fun with the new electives and keep sending ideas and proposals for additional electives in both the IA and PPA programs.
