CHAIR'S
CORNER
We have two big news items related to PPA faculty. First, Dr. David Spence has accepted a faculty appointment with our department. Dr. Spence is Executive Vice Chancellor and Chief Academic Officer for the entire CSU system-- i.e., the #2 person in the system. (It's traditional for someone in his position to accept an academic appointment at one of the CSU campuses, and his interest in our program speaks well of its reputation.) Dr. Spence will continue to perform his Chancellor's Office duties in Long Beach. However, he will help us develop the higher education policy and administration curriculum, and will likely teach a course in this area during the next academic year. Second, we have received approval to conduct searches for two new faculty members. One position will be in public administration and the other in higher education. We will make arrangements for PPA students to meet with candidates we bring to campus for interviews (and depending a little on the time constraints we'll likely arrange for alumni to meet candidates as well). I'll keep you informed about the progress of these searches. Now, let me move to another matter: possible summer PPA courses. Several students recently have expressed interest in such classes. In the near future we will survey current students to obtain more specific data about the nature and strength of such interest. Let me offer two caveats at the outset: 1) our ability to offer summer classes is largely dependent on our success in the upcoming searches; 2) accordingly, it's very unlikely we will offer such courses before summer, 2003. Finally, our next alumni/current student social event will be on Friday, January 11. We'll meet at 5:30 for beer and conversation (note the order of these items) at the Fox and Goose on R Street in downtown Sacramento. In the near future we'll also hold a downtown Sacramento lunchtime discussion of a substantive topic: civil service reform. We wish you a happy holiday season and look forward to seeing you again in the new year. Ted Lascher We welcome your contributions to the Communicator!
