FACULTY

Peter Detwiler
The 'Journal of the American Planning Association' published a book review by part-time PPA faculty member Peter Detwiler. Detwiler reviewed "Building Rules," a book that examines growth controls in three California cities. His review appears in JAPA's Spring 2001 issue.

Rob Wassmer
Rob Wassmer, Public Policy and Administration, has completed a paper on "Retail Sprawl, Urban Containment, and the Fiscalization of Land Use in the Western United States." On April 23 he presented this paper at a brown bag seminar to the Sacramento Branch of the American Society of Public Administrators. On April 26, Professor Wassmer presented the same paper at a national meeting of the Urban Affairs Association in Detroit. Related to this work, he is currently advising Sacramento Assemblyman Daryl Steinberg on a bill he wishes to sponsor to reduce competition among cities and counties for commercial development and the local sales tax revenue it brings. Such competition can worsen regional traffic, pollution, and urban sprawl because it pulls retail activity out of traditional retail centers.

We welcome your contributions to the Communicator! Contact the Director, Bob Waste, or the Department Secretary, Suzi Byrd, (916) 278-6557, in the PPA Department Office.
