CHINESE FOR AFFIRMATIVE ACTION AND THE ASIAN PACIFIC AMERICAN LEGAL CENTER SEEK APPLICANTS FOR A NEW VOICES FELLOWSHIP
Chinese for Affirmative Action (CAA) and the Asian Pacific American Legal Center (APALC) are seeking an individual to sponsor for a two-year New Voices Fellowship to develop and staff an Asian Pacific American Public Policy Center in Sacramento, California.
CAA and APALC are exploring the possibility of opening the first Asian Pacific American civil rights office in California's capitol to coordinate statewide advocacy and provide public education on civil rights issues. The Center's primary goal will be increase the influence and input of Asian Pacific Americans on statewide policies by conducting legislative, budgetary, and administrative advocacy. It will help coordinate activities among regional Asian Pacific American community-based groups on civil rights issues and provide a mechanism for these communities to affect state policy on a consistent basis. The fellow would work with senior staff from both organizations to develop a plan for opening the Center, including developing a work plan that focuses on specific issues, and conducting outreach to and developing partnerships with other organizations. Once the Center has been opened, the fellow will be the primary policy advocate based in Sacramento. Our goal is to open an office by early 2003. The fellow would be based in CAA's San Francisco office until the Center is established.
Recognizing the limited opportunities for effective mentoring of individuals new to the policy field, the goal of the New Voices Program is to "help both the organization and its Fellow reach their true leadership potential." The Fellow and the sponsoring organizations will be provided with technical assistance and additional substantive training. The Program will provide full salary support and fringe benefits for the first year and 75% support for the second year in addition to financial assistance for loan obligations and professional development assistance. You may obtain more information about the New Voices Fellowship Program at http://newvoices.aed.org/home.html
The New Voices Program will grant fellowships to individuals who have a "undergraduate or graduate degree or equivalent education and experience." CAA and APALC seek to sponsor an individual who has:
- A commitment to advancing the civil rights of under-represented
communities;
- Experience working with Asian Pacific American
communities;
- Excellent research, oral and written skills; and
- Advocacy or policy experience in civil rights, immigrant rights or related fields. Preference will be given to individuals who have experience with California's legislative process.
You may obtain more information about CAA by reviewing our web site at www.caasf.org. Information about APALC is available at www.apalc.org.
If you have questions, please contact Theodore Wang, Policy Director for CAA, at 415/274-6750 or Aileen Almeria Louie, Vice President of APALC, at 213-977-7500. Interested individuals should fax a cover letter, resume and writing sample to 415/397-8770 or e-mail to twang@caasf.org. Applications must be received by December 12, 2001.
