ANNOUNCEMENTS

Beer and PPA, again
Greetings everyone. The last Friday late afternoon get together worked very well, so we're going to do it again-- with an eye toward making it a monthly tradition. So for everyone (alumni, current students, faculty, friends) who's available and willing, let's meet once more at the Fox & Goose, 10th R. Streets in downtown Sacto, on Friday, February 22 at 5:30.

Faculty Searches
You may recall that we're (happily) engaged in two full time faculty searches. The first is for the long sought "public administration" person who will greatly help strengthen that side of the curriculum. The second is for a specialist in higher education policy (our first choice being a higher education economist, but we're looking at others with higher education expertise as well). Faculty searches come along rarely, so we're facing decisions that are crucial for the future of our department.

In recognition of the importance of the faculty searches, we would like to get input from current students and alumni about our candidates. We envision this input taking two forms. First, we're looking for two alumni and two current students to serve as non-voting (the nonvoting status being mandatory under CSU system policy), advisory members of the search committees (one alumnus and one current student on the PA committee; one alumnus and one current student on the higher education committee). This would entail attending all formal candidate presentations and participating in group discussions about candidates. It's likely that we'll bring something like three or four candidates to campus for each search and that each will make a late afternoon presentation. If you're interested in serving in this capacity please send me a note, indicate your search preference (higher ed. or PA), and remind me of your status (current student or alumnus)-- in case my addled brain can't remember. If multiple people apply for a slot we'll choose the "winner" by a random process.

Second, ALL students and alumni will be welcome to attend one or more presentations and provide written or e-mail comments, and we'll consider such input in our deliberations. Even if you can only attend one presentation and provide comments on one person, that would be helpful to us. It's also likely that we'll arrange for candidates to meet separately with students and/or alumni, although this will depend a little on scheduling and candidates' time on campus.

Again, if you're interested in serving on a search committee send me a note.

Nancy Shulock
Director of the Institute for Higher Education Leadership and Policy:
With the establishment of the new Institute and the recruitment of a new PPA faculty member in higher education, the PPA program will be incorporating elective coursework in higher education policy, beginning in the 2002/03 academic year. In the meantime, I would welcome learning about any students with an interest in higher education policy. There may be opportunities to do research projects with the Institute later this year and over the summer. Please come by Tahoe 3063 if you're interested in higher education policy.
