Nancy Shulock,
Director of the Institute for Higher Education Leadership and Policy:
With the establishment of the new Institute and the recruitment of a
new PPA faculty member in higher education, the PPA program will be
incorporating elective coursework in higher education policy, beginning
in the 2002/03 academic year. In the meantime, I would welcome learning
about any students with an interest in higher education policy. There
may be opportunities to do research projects with the Institute later
this year and over the summer. Please come by Tahoe 3063 if you're interested
in higher education policy.
Rob Wassmer, Public Policy and Administration, had his commissioned paper on "The Benefits of Growth" published by the Urban Land Institute in January. The Urban Land Institute (ULI) is a national organization that represents progressive developers and where the first to promote the use of "smart growth". ULI asked Wassmer and his co-author to produce a paper that discusses the economic benefits that population growth bring to a metropolitan region.
He also participated in a Lincoln Institute of Land Policy Conference in Scottsdale, AZ in January on the topic of local taxes and land use. He presented his own paper on "The Influence of Local Fiscal Structure and Growth Control Choices on 'Big Box' Urban Sprawl in the American West". This will later appear in an edited volume published by the Lincoln Institute.
Then he presented a GIS-based map presentation of social disparities in the Sacramento Region at the Community Service Planning Council's Conference on "Navigating the Future" that was held at CSUS on January 17.
