Part-Time Research Assistants
The project coordinator for the LA Local Agency Formation Commission (LAFCO) special reorganization (aka secession) studies. They are processing
proposals from three communities that are currently part of the City of Los Angeles to form independent cities (San Fernando Valley, Harbor, and Hollywood). The question of secession will be placed on the Nov. 2002 ballot. The terms and conditions for secession are being developed by LAFCO, and must be approved by August.

They're looking for a part-time research assistant to help with preparation of staff reports to the Commission on a variety of municipal policy issues. The work involves both economic and policy analysis. The assistant will be doing spreadsheet analysis, budget analysis, policy analysis, and review of criticisms and proposals raised by the parties, in addition to some more mundane tasks. The assistant should have solid English skills and the poise to request information from various government agencies. The assistant will be bound by a gag order, preventing communication with third parties about work in progress on this project; however the assistant would not be prevented from conducting research on this issue in the future based on publicly available information. Hourly pay is $20/hour without benefits. The work will be done initially from a home office in the Pocket area, with the possibility of conducting some of the work from an off-site location. Schedule is flexible, with ideal number of weekly work hours in the 10-20 range.

Interested students should talk to PPA Professor Rob Wassmer, then send a resume, with cover letter indicating their availability, to Beverly Burr via fax (916) 393-6139 or email.
