COMMUNICATOR

November 5, 2003 autumn_leaf

The Communicator is the official department newsletter serving the students of the Graduate Programs in Public Policy and Administration at California State University, Sacramento.
CHAIR'S CORNER

At long last, it’s fall in Sacramento! And this means that the recall season is over (well, for now), the Kings are back... and it’s time for those of you who are graduating to be exploring your options. We’ve already seen a number of interesting internship/ fellowship opportunities, and over the next few months I expect to share information about several others. I would be very pleased if PPA graduates took positions with the Capital Fellows programs, the various city internship programs, etc.

HIGHER EDUCATION FORUM

A final reminder: the PPA department is sponsoring a forum on financing higher education today (Wednesday, November 5th). The event will be from 4:30-6:00 p.m. in the Auburn Suite of the University Union. Please see the flyer for more information. We hope to see you there.

TIP OF THE HAT TO LISA MARTIN

PPA alumna Lisa Martin was honored at the annual CSUS Alumni Honors Luncheon on October 24. Lisa received her graduate degree in 1998. She is a policy analyst and legislative advocate for the California Taxpayers Association, where her responsibilities include conducting policy research, providing legislative testimony, and writing articles for the Association’s weekly newsletter. Lisa helped establish the Department’s alumni chapter and currently is serving on the PPA Advisory Committee. We are very proud of her accomplishments.

THAT SEVEN YEAR DEADLINE

Yes, the University is serious about enforcing a seven year deadline to receive a graduate degree. And while that may seem like a long time for program newcomers, experience shows that it becomes meaningful for some people who have needed to take a sabbatical for personal or professional reasons. We have now added a web page that can help people determine when they must finish the program; go to http://www.csus.edu/mppa/timelimit/7-year-deadline.htm.

KEEP THOSE TIPS COMING

I cannot overstate how much we depend on you for tips as to job leads, internships, etc. In recent weeks people have sent me helpful information on everything from fellowships in Europe to finding positions in the new Schwarzenegger Administration. Please continue to send me those notes.
