The Communicator is the official department newsletter serving the students of the Graduate Programs in Public Policy and Administration at California State University, Sacramento.
ANNOUNCEMENTS

Invitation from Nancy Shulock and Miguel Ceja:
If you are interested, or think you might become interested, in higher education policy, please come by the Institute for Higher Education Leadership & Policy (Tahoe Hall 3063) or either of our offices to chat.

There could be opportunities for graduate assistantships or to collaborate with us on research projects. This is a very interesting time for higher education policy in California, with budget cuts having led to the first ever announcement, since the historic 1960 Master Plan, that not all eligible students will be admitted to the state's public universities. Interesting issues abound, on topics such as financing higher education, improving the community college transfer function, community college governance, student access, retention and graduation, student financial aid policies, the role of colleges and universities in preparing K-12 teachers, community colleges and workforce development, etc.

We look forward to meeting you and to telling you about the Institute. You can visit the Institute's website at www.csus.edu/ihe.

Class Clarification
Hello again everyone. We continue to be very pleased with the feedback we've
received about our collaborative decision making courses, PPA 296H&J (Booher). However, we've learned that there may be a small misunderstanding about the requirements to take these classes, so I want to clarify our policy in that regard. We generally advise people to take the more theoretical course (PPA 296H) before taking the more practice oriented course (PPA 296J). But this is NOT mandatory, and for some people it may be fine to take PPA 296J first or take only that course. If you have any questions about what's appropriate in your circumstances I suggest you contact Prof. David Booher directly. His e-mail address is dbooher@uclink4.berkeley.edu and his phone number is (916) 445-2079.

The Legischool Project
Dear Friends,

The LegiSchool Project and the Government and Public Administration Academy at Hiram Johnson High School have teamed up to place students in government, nonprofit internship and government-related positions beginning this fall.

During the fall semester, a group of 35-40 juniors and seniors will be placed in all levels of government agencies and non-profit organizations in Sacramento as part of an ROP class within the Government and Public Administration Academy. The goal of the class will be to help students develop professional and practical job skills that will prepare them for life beyond high school AND to introduce them to government and government-related work.

We need your help in finding placements for these young people. If you know someone who would be interested in mentoring a student, including yourself, for approximately 10 hours per week beginning in late September through January 23, please forward contact information as soon as possible.

LegiSchool is a civic education collaboration between California State University, Sacramento, and the California State Legislature, administered by the Center for California Studies. The Project's mission is to engage young people in matters of public policy and government by creating opportunities for students to learn about state government and important public policy issues impacting California. In doing so, we hope to motivate young people to take an interest in the public life around them and to encourage their active participation in our political process.

If you have any questions, please contact Kolleen Ostgaard via email ostgaard@csus.edu or by phone at 278-4642.

Thank you for your assistance and valuable input.

Kolleen Ostgaard, MPPA 2000
LegiSchool Project Director
