Office of Mayor Christopher Cabaldon

Regional Policy Internship: This intern provides research, analysis and project casework in support of the Mayor's service on a variety of regional boards and commission, and statewide organizations concerned with regional policy. The intern reviews policy and project proposals, attends meetings, researches issues and cases, assists constituents and organizations, and advises the Mayor on regional issues, including transportation, air quality, housing, open space, environmental justice, economic development, public finance, and land use. Travel to meetings in Sacramento region is required, but not provided by the City. Coursework and/or experience in politics, government, and public policy is required. Familiarity with law, public administration, psychology, and/or economics is helpful. (12 -18 hours per week)

Mayor's Education Liaison: Provides research, analysis and project casework in support of the Mayor's educational excellence and opportunity initiatives. The liaison is responsible for communication and monitoring with the Washington Unified School District, Los Rios Community College District, UC Davis, CSU Sacramento, and other education and workforce development agencies. The intern reviews policy and project proposals, attends meetings, researches issues and cases, assists constituents and organizations, and advises the Mayor on education issues, including follow-up work from the Mayor's Blue-ribbon Commission on School Excellence, construction of a new community college center, development of a new high school, and implementation of new after school and preschool initiatives. Basic coursework or experience in education policy is required. Familiarity with politics, government, law, public administration, psychology and/or economics is helpful. (12- 15 hours per week)

Environmental Policy Intern: Provides research, analysis, and project casework in support of the Mayor's service on the Regional Water Quality Control Board, The Delta Protection Commission, and the Cal-Fed Drinking Water Subcommittee. The intern reviews policy and project proposals, attends meetings, researches issues and cases, assists constituents and organizations, and advises the Mayor on environmental issues, with particular focus on water supply and quality, recreation, habitat, and land conservation. The intern will also assist with the convening of city environmental workshop. Familiarity with environmental policy, law, politics, and /or resources economics is desirable. No specific scientific background is required, although some competency in biology, ecology, and/or chemistry is helpful. This is not an advocacy position. The intern must have the ability to understand and communicate a broad range of view and interests. Travel to meetings in Sacramento region is required, but not provided by the City. (15 - 24 hours per week)

Qualifications for above internships: Open to upper division and graduate students in all academic disciplines. Strong analytical and communication skills are essential.

Mayor's Asian American Community Liaison: Responsibilities include convening a statewide Asian/ Pacific Islander Caucus of Mayors, city council members, and other municipal officials , in cooperation with the League of California Cities; organizing a Town Hall to strengthen civic engagement and participation by the city's growing Southeast Asian community; and organizing a regional Filipino American Civic Leadership Institute to increase participation in politics and government at the city, school, and county level. In addition the Liaison provides support for the Mayor's work as member of the Capital Unity Council, which works to end hate crimes and bias. The Liaison may also conduct research, analysis, and project casework on regional social equity policies and issues. Open to all undergraduate majors and master's degree students. Strong oral and communication ability is required. Excellent organizational skills, and an understanding and appreciation of diverse cultural groups and experiences are essential. (12 - 18 hours per week)

City of Phoenix, Arizona

The city of Phoenix is offering a one year internship program beginning in June 2003. The salary range is from about $31K to about $41k, plus benefits. Kansas City is offering a one year city management internship program. Interns work out of the City Manager's Office and rotate through a couple other offices. US Office of the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives
The ICLEI in Downtown Berkeley is seeking a part-time intern for the U.S. Cities for Climate Protection Campaign(CCP). The CCP is a global effort to improve local air quality and urban livability. More than 500 governments including 140 US cities and counties, are currently participating in the CCP. The campaign operates training and technical assistance projects that focus on reducing emissions through energy-efficiency, renewable energy, waste management, land-use planning, and transportation waste.

The intern will contact CCP local government participants to assess ongoing progress with greenhouse gas mitigation programs by collecting data through phone, fax and e-mail. They will discover and characterize greenhouse gas mitigation programs being undertaken by CCP participants using a greenhouse gas emissions analysis software package developed for the Campaign. Other duties include organizing and managing Filemaker databases, assisting with document preparation and the preparation of web content and providing general support to the Campaign as deemed necessary by CCP staff.

Qualifications: This internship is appropriate for graduate students or highly advanced undergraduates. Candidates should have substantial aptitude using analytical computer software and spreadsheets. Knowledge of Filemaker is a plus. Demonstrated energy and environmental research and analysis skills also a major plus. Excellent verbal communication skills, strong quantitative ability, and an ability to multitask.

The internship will run through late May or early June. Working hours are flexible and will be in the range of 12-15 hours a week. Compensation will be in the range of $12 - $14 per hour. Latino Issues Forum
The LIF is announcing its 2003 Public Policy Summer Fellowship Program. This program seeks four students interested in working with a leading policy and advocacy institute in shaping a better vision for California. Students will gain valuable hands-on experience shaping public policy and will be instructed on policy analysis, advocacy and various aspects of California policy. Students in Public Policy, urban planning, public health, transportation, housing, environmental sciences, natural resources business administration or public administration are encouraged to apply.

Description: A three month, full-time summer fellowship (June-August 2003) assisting program staff in research, legislative/policy analysis, coordination of advocacy campaigns, and participation in the organization's educational seminars and conferences. This will involve working with public, private and community organizations. Fellows will receive a $1,900 monthly stipend and a maximum of $100 per month in Commuter Checks for public transpiration. One fellow will be in Fresno, California so please specify if this is of interest in your application.

Areas of Concern: LIF is currently seeking assistance in several innovative and groundbreaking projects: Energy Policy, Telecommunications, Environmental/Sustainable Development leadership, and Health Access. Each Fellow will assigned to one of these policy projects.

Qualifications: Preference will be given to undergraduate junior/seniors, graduate, or professional students who are self-directed, have a demonstrated interest in Latino public policy issues, friendly demeanor and displays a high level of professionalism to represent LIF in the community. This position requires strong writing, communication and analytical skills, computer word processing skills in programs for Macintosh/IBM compatible computers and the desire to learn more about various public policy issues. Bilingual (English/Spanish) is preferred but not required.
