COMMUNICATOR

April 7, 2006

The Communicator is the official department newsletter serving the students of the Graduate Programs in Public Policy and Administration at California State University, Sacramento.
CHAIR'S CORNER

Well it’s just another glorious spring here in Seattle… oh, I mean Sacramento. Keep watching those levies.

OPPORTUNITY TO PROVIDE PROGRAM REVIEW INPUT
Currently PPA is undergoing the periodic campus program review required of all campus departments. A faculty program review team has been established and has been examining our self study, meeting with PPA faculty members, etc. The team will ultimately issue a report that will go to the Faculty Senate and then to President Gonzalez.

Professor Fred Baldini, chair of the program review team, has requested an opportunity to meet with interested PPA students and alumni. We have set a meeting time of 6-7 p.m. on Monday, April 17 as a time for anyone who’s interested to meet with Dr. Baldini and perhaps other members of the review team; faculty members will not be present. The meeting will take place on campus in Tahoe Hall 1007. I hope many of you can make it; this is a great chance to provide helpful input.

KUDOS

  • Mike Applegarth, a PPA student finishing his thesis, has been selected as a finalist for the Presidential Management Fellowship finalist. He is currently in the process of securing a placement with a specific federal office.
  • Susan Catron (MPPA ’05) was chosen as making the best presentation at the recent Sacramento State Student Research Competition. She is now eligible to represent the campus in the CSU system-wide competition. Susan is a fiscal and policy analyst with the Legislative Analyst’s Office.
  • Lisa Martin (MPPA ’98) was featured in the spring 2006 edition of Sacramento State’s Arts & Sciences Today. Lisa is Senior Policy Analyst and Associate Director of Legislation for the California Taxpayer’s Association. She is also a member of the departmental advisory committee and was previously recognized with a PPA Alumni Honors Award.

GREETINGS FROM WASHINGTON, D.C. (SACRAMENTO EAST)
Beth Topf (MPPA 2005) writes: “Washington is great- I love it here. I got a new job at the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO) as a Prevention Policy Analyst. I work on issues related to obesity, diabetes, and physical activity/nutrition. The people I work with are great and it is very interesting! For example, we have our hill day where State Health Officials go to the Capitol to lobby for more health-related money. I got to work on developing materials for them related to the Prevention Block Grant, since it was zeroed out. Most people here have an MPH but my boss has an MPP, so that is cool!”

SUMMER 2006 CLASSES
People can sign up for summer classes beginning on April 17. In particular, those considering enrolling in the new collaborative governance class (PPA 296L) should keep that in mind.

PARTY AT ROB WASSMER’S HOUSE
Perhaps the critical event of the spring is almost upon us: the annual party for PPA students, alumni, faculty, and friends at Rob Wassmer’s house on Saturday, April 29. Watch for an announcement coming soon.
