ANNOUNCEMENTS
Announcing the Annual Distinguished Graduate Award
In honor of Professor Cristy Jensen, the founding faculty member of the Graduate Program in Public Policy and Administration at California State University, we have created an annual award presented to a graduating Master’s student who the faculty feels exemplifies the knowledge, commitment, and spirit that Cristy has brought to her lifetime of achievement in the public sector. The first award was granted to Jean-Marie McKinney who completed her thesis on Teacher Compensation: An Evaluation of Teacher Salary and Student Performance in the spring of 2007. Jean-Marie currently works as the Senate Floor Manager for the Senate Republican Caucus. As the Floor Manager, it is her responsibility to create and maintain a tracking system for all bills assigned via the Senate Rules Committee. She is required to produce analyses for those resolutions not assigned to a policy committee, monitor bills as they move throughout the legislative process and compile a document that includes the analyses for bills as they appear on the floor. Other duties for her include the tracking of amendments and facilitation of bill analyses as they move through appropriations. Jean-Marie has agreed to be the new director of the PPA Alumna Association. Please contact her if you are interested in getting involved at Jean-Marie.McKinney@SEN.CA.GOV.
Got Plans?
The City of Sacramento offers a ten week course detailing how the city approaches planning decisions and the impacts those decisions have on the people who live and work within the city. I attended the Spring 2007 “ Planning Academy” and, along with my classmates, learned the finer points of the California Environmental Quality Act, the Ahwahnee Principles and the public health impacts of fostering smart growth in the city and region.

The Academy is ideally suited for people who are active in their communities and want to learn how to become a more effective advocate, but don’t have a great deal of knowledge about the planning process. That being said, it does provide a unique opportunity for those of us with more formal knowledge about municipal planning to gain insight into the way our city planners think, learn about Sacramento’s General Plan update, gain a better understanding of the real-world complexities and work that goes into crafting a 50 year blueprint for regional growth, and meet some like-minded people.

If you know a Sacramento resident or business owner who is interested in spending ten Monday evenings learning about how to penetrate the layers of the Sacramento’s planning process and a couple of Saturday mornings touring the city’s redevelopment projects have them check it out at www.cityofsacramento.org/planning/academy.

Roman Porter is a first-year PPA student and the communications director of the Fair Political Practices Commission, a former Senate Fellow and new student of the MPPA program.
Wet-Wednesday Faculty/Student/Alumni Monthly Gatherings
The tradition continues on the third Wednesday of each month in gathering at the Rubicon Brewing Company in Downtown Sacramento (2004 Capital Avenue) to throw back a few frosty ones, solve California public policy concerns, and enjoy good conversation. The schedule of faculty to certainly be there follows. See you there:
