DIRECTOR'S CORNER

Welcome back for another great semester in the International Affairs and Public Policy and Administration graduate programs! I wanted to take a brief moment to let you know what is happening in the department in the near future and in the coming academic year.

We have just completed our once-every-five-years large-scale Self Study of the MPPA program and department. Overall, we are very pleased with the quality of students and core courses in the program. We are also pleased with the Urban Policy and Administration elective option, and with our slowly expanding electives in environmental policy, health policy, and intergovernmental relations. Possible new elective options in the future include education policy, and comparative public policy. We are also heartened by the response rate and ideas drawn from our survey of MPPA students and graduates. There will be new efforts to bolster such key concerns as ethics and PowerPoint presentation skills in the MPPA curriculum. Thanks to the students who helped with the Self-Study through the survey and/or focus groups!

MPPA and IA students working on their thesis should enroll for PPA 500 or IA 500, Culminating Experience. Remember that you need to have completed your Advancement to Candidacy before you can register for the 500 course.

Remember, CASPER plus ends February 11. It is best to have your schedules set by then. The deadline for submitting add/drop petitions with departmental approval is February 25.

Finally, welcome to the new millennium (or the last year of the old millennium -- depending on your point of view)... Bob
