DIRECTOR'S CORNER

Happy Thanksgiving holidays everybody!
We have lots to be thankful for in both the IA and PPA program this season.
Three developments are particularly important to note.
First, in the PPA program, we are introducing a new Health Policy elective,
PPA 296F Health Policy & Administration, taught by a prominent capitol
area health policy professional, Kim Belshe - the Director of the Department
of Health under former Governor Pete Wilson. We are very excited about
this new program elective, but need to alert students that in order fit
this class into our schedule and budget we have moved the class to this
coming FALL. Please make yourself a note to sign up early for this elective
during CASPER registration this summer.
Secondly, I will be teaching the PPA 230 Public Budgeting and Finance
course this SPRING, on Tuesday nights, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m.. I am really
looking forward to my second adventure in teaching courses in the core
curriculum. I am excited about the budgeting course and would love to
have feedback from PPA students about the course before, during and after
the Spring 2000 semester. Let's hear those thoughts and suggestions about
PPA 230!! It's a good chance for feedback about the course and program,
and a great chance to have a hands-on experience with the most recent
copies of budgets from the federal government, the state of California,
Sacramento County, and the City of Sacramento.
Finally, IA students will have twice as many reasons as usual to meet
Economics Professor Ane Quade this semester since Ane is teaching TWO
courses in the Spring for IA. Ane will be teaching IA 214, Research Methods
in international Affairs, and IA 216, Foundations of International Economics
Affairs. Sign up early for the courses since Ane is both a very popular
teacher in the IA program and a skilled grad advisor for IA. Ane has also
served as first or second reader on a number of recent IA theses. All
in all, Ane is an important and interesting faculty member to meet. I
recommend you do so ASAP, and certainly plan to meet her and take her
course(s) this Spring.
HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!
Bob Waste
IA & PPA Director
P.S. Please keep sending in those e-mails, letters and phone calls suggesting
new courses in the IA and PPA programs. I have received a number of good
suggestions that the faculty will be considering this year but we can
always use more good ideas. Thanks & keep up the good work.

We welcome your contributions to the Communicator! Make announcements,
share your good news, reflect on your academic and professional achievements,
or submit an article. Contact the Director, Bob Waste, or the Department Secretary,
Suzi Byrd, (916) 278-6557, in
the PPA/IA Department Office.
