The American Society for Public Administration (ASPA) is having its annual awards dinner Wednesday, October 4, here in Sacramento. Among the honorees will be our own Cristy Jensen for Outstanding Public Administration Professor. Also honored will be Deborah Franklin for Outstanding Public Administration Student (Deborah graduated from our program last year). We hope some of you will be able to attend. END-OF-SESSION REPORT
How did local governments fare in the Legislature? What happened to those land use and redevelopment bills? Did the Governor sign the LAFCO reforms? News about the fate of these bills and others can be found on the website for the Senate Local Government Committee, according to Peter Detwiler. Detwiler is a part-time instructor in the MPPA program in addition to being the Senate Committee's staff director. Go to http://www.sen.ca.gov/locgov and then click on the "significant legislation" heading.

Student Update
Congratulations, Pat!
Pat Sanger, MPPA student, was recently promoted into the position of Park Services Manger (at a very rewarding salary) in the City of Sacramento Department of Parks and Recreation. He has operational and fiscal responsibility for all 167 of Sacramento's parks, including: parks maintenance, tree services, park safety service, and landscape architect (park development, acquisition and advanced planning). An explicit reason for his promotion is his academic background in public policy and administration, giving him a much broader approach to, and greater understanding of, policy and political issues. The City Managers office told him during the appointment process that his analytical approach to policy and his understanding of the various political issues inherent within the system served to "tap" him for this position and future City management. Additionally, his graduate student assistant position at CA State Parks and the exposure that position gave him is a major factor contributing to where he is now.

Pat says, "None of this would have been possible for me had I not been a part of the CSUS MPPA Program and been fortunate enough to learn from folks like Bob, Ted, Rob, and Peter. Perhaps there are other grad students wondering where the program might lead them. I am grateful to the program, staff, and faculty for giving me the opportunity to pursue my dream of working in the public service at a level that will allow me to make a positive impact on the lives of those around me."
