Redevelopment Internship
The City of Pinole Redevelopment Agency
invites applicants for two Redevelopment Intern positions in the Community
Development Department. The City
is seeking graduate student interns to provide assistance with a range
of redevelopment projects. The following programs and projects are available
for participation and/or development. The internships are traditionally
part-time during the school year.
PROGRESS, Agency Newsletter
Manage the Agency's bi-annual newsletter that is produced in cooperation
with the local high school.
New Development
Provide assistance to various development projects throughout the
City, including a proposed downtown mixed-use building and a proposed
affordable housing complex.
Community Clean-Up/Beautification
Assist with programs that utilize local community
groups to remove blight from the Redevelopment Project Area.
Marketing/Events
Help develop and implement marketing programs and special events and
promotions for the historic Old Town area. Past activities have included
a "Shop Old Town" advertising campaign, "Fall in Love
with Old Town" contest, and "Taste of Old Town" event.
Residential Rehabilitation Program and Commercial Rehabilitation
Program
Assist with allocating loans and grants for the improvement of single
family homes, apartments, and commercial structures throughout the Redevelopment
Project Area; assist with loan portfolio management of the $2.1 million
invested by the Agency to date.
First Time Home Buyers
Assist with processing loans to low and moderate income households in
the first time purchase of a home.
Youth Programs
Manage projects that involve local youth in evening activities and other
beneficial programs.
The City of Pinole has worked with previous interns on
professional reports and master's theses; many of the City's projects
are suitable for development as academic projects. City interns work
under minimal supervision, present their own staff reports to the Planning
Commission and City Council, and gain valuable experience in project
management and redevelopment practice Previous interns have gone onto
full-time employment with, among other agencies, the City of Pleasanton,
City of Oakland, City of San Jose, and City of Pinole.
The City of Pinole, population 18,000, is located on San
Pablo Bay, 15 minutes from Berkeley and 30 minutes from San Francisco.
Pinole's Redevelopment Agency has an annual budget of $4.5 million.

TUPE Project
Graduate Student Internship Description
LPC Consulting Associates is seeking Graduate and Undergraduate
Senior students to assist with data collection for Tobacco Use Prevention
Education (TUPE) projects. Hired students will collect data from high
schools within the Elk Grove Unified School District (EGUSD) and Sacramento
City Unified School District (SCUSD). This internship
is an opportunity for students to learn about community-based research
hands on, as well as learn how community programs function. This position
will require up to 20 hours per month from September 1999 through April
2000. Th hourly rate is $10.
Description of the TUPE Grant
Both EGUSD and SCUSD have multi-faceted tobacco prevention, intervention,
and cessation programs. The programs include components for the following:
- Cessation, both for general audiences and for pregnant teens;
- Intervention strategies, designed to prevent start up among teens
determined to be "at extremely high risk" for taking up smoking or other
tobacco use as well ready students currently using tobacco for cessation;
and
- General Prevention; aimed at the full student population, to be provided
by a cadre of trained teachers and/or community resource people.
Description of Duties
Each graduate student will serve as both a data collector and an observer
of program implementation. Students will be matched up with schools based
on their class schedules and evaluation needs. Responsibilities include:
- Monitoring systematic and regularly scheduled data collection: Each
school will implement the TUPE program to best meet the needs of their
student body. The schools will choose form a selection of activities,
lesson plans, and audio-visual materials to create their specialized
program. Students will work closely with each school to collect and/or
administer student surveys as the school implements each component of
the program. For each activity or lesson, the students will monitor
the collection of demographic information such as the total number and
grade level of attending students.
- Administering the Healthy Kids baseline survey: At the end of the
school year the students will administer the Healthy Kids survey. The
survey serves as the baseline for overall change in student attitudes
and behaviors toward tobacco use. Schools may need assistance administering
the survey and collection permission slips.
- Conducting interviews with convenience samples of students, and/or
focus groups to elicit feedback about various strategies: Students will
facilitate focus groups and interviews in order to gain qualitative
insight into students' attitudes and behaviors toward tobacco use. Additionally,
the students will gain youth feedback regarding the effectiveness of
the TUPE program materials and implementation; and
- Regularly observing the TUPE program implementation: Students will
document the use of TUPE materials and observe each school's program
implementation process. Based on LPC needs and student interest, students
may be asked to assist with data collection for additional programs
such as teenage pregnancy prevention. Training Hired students will participate
in a four-hour training session in which they will learn about the individual
schools and their responsibilities. For security reasons, in order to
work closely with schools, EGUSD requires that each student submit fingerprints.
LPC Consulting Associates will assume the cost of the fingerprints.

The Sacramento Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce

relations division of the Chamber. This non-paid internship reports to
the Regional Policy and Programs department. Compensation:

GAO Student Employment Opportunities OR-600-99 Student
Internship Program

POSITIONS AVAILABLE:
GAO is hiring graduate and undergraduate students to assist the agency's
staff in responding to congressional requests by performing research;
determining information needs; collecting information through record
searches, automated data retrieval, interviewing, and questionnaires;
analyzing information and formulating recommendations; and writing reports
and briefings.
Intern appointments are limited to 16 weeks. Appointments may be paid
or non-paid (volunteer).
QUALIFICATIONS:
Generally, students with majors or course work in accounting, business
administration, public policy/administration, computer science, management
information systems, economics, or the social sciences are most likely
to be successful candidates for the GAO internship program. Students
with other majors and course work will also be considered.
COMPENSATION:
Paid student interns are appointed at the GS-4, 5, 7, or 9 levels depending
on the number of semester hours or quarter hours completed when selected.
Salaries range from about $1,400 at the GS-4 level to about $2,500 per
month at the GS-9 level.
