Community Programs

At the School of Music, we offer a variety of community programs and workshops, and we co-sponsor programs run by area non-profit organizations. Here's a sampling of our offerings; all events are held at the School of Music at Sacramento State. Click on the title or photo to learn more.

CalCap logoCalCap Chamber Workshop

A chamber music workshop for musicians of all ages, presented each summer in two, week-long sessions, beginning in late July. Participants interact with a variety of ensembles, personnel and repertoire through intensive rehearsals, daily performances, and coaching sessions by top professional musicians from the Sacramento and Bay areas.


CMEA logoGolden Empire Festivals

Each spring, the Capitol Section of the California Music Educators' Association runs a series of band, orchestra, and choir festivals, as well as the solo and ensemble festival, at Sac State on select Saturdays. Particpating groups are from area schools, but it's open and free to the public to come and watch. Performances run every half hour from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., which a lunch break at the noon hour.


Mandarins logoMandarins Academies

The School of Music has a strategic partnership with the Sacramento Mandarins Drum & Bugle Corps, and we host the Mandarins Academies on four Sundays in the fall between September and December. Youth ages 14-21 will gain experience and further their skills in brass, drums, colorguard, drum major, and new for fall 2016 - woodwinds. Each session runs from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., and pre-registration four all four dates is only $50.


String Project logoString Project

A flagship program of this kind in the West and a member of the National String Project Consortium, we provide carefully structured group lessons in violin and cello for children in the fourth grade and up. The lessons are taught by School of Music undergraduate and graduate teachers and supervised by Sac State faculty. Rehearsals run on Monday and Wednesday afternoons during the regular school year. Free public concerts are presented annually, in mid-December and mid-May.


Sacramento Youth Symphony logoSYS Summer Chamber Workshop

The Sacramento Youth Symphony runs a summer chamber music workshop for youth ages 11-19 with at least two years of experience on their primary musical instrument. This workshop runs in July in two, week-long sessions, the second week of which is hosted at Sac State.


Sacramento Traditional Jazz Society logoTrad Jazz Youth Band Festival

Run by the Sacramento Traditionial Jazz Society in conjunction with our Jazz Studies area, this is a day-long festival held on a Saturday in early February. The festival is dedicated to the performance and teaching of traditional jazz, with combo bands performing non-competitively and recieving feedback and clinics. Participating groups must have 9 or fewer members who must be under the age of 22. Open to the public, all-day admission runs $12 and includes the evening Showcase & Awards concert.


School of Music logoWinter Jazz Festival

Our Jazz Studies area hosts a jazz festival open to Elementary School, Middle School, High School, and Collegiate Jazz Ensembles, Jazz Combos, Vocal Jazz Ensembles. It is a non-competitive, educational festival with clinicians who provide constructive commentary through verbal feedback. Our festival revolves completely around one main concept: it is important that our young musicians are taught how to play jazz while enjoying the learning process through every means available. Open to the public, all-day admission runs $10 and includes an evening concert.
