Lindsey Bartlett was born and raised in the United Kingdom. Her earliest musical studies began with piano, cello and percussion and eventually the bassoon, the instrument in which she specialized. Before coming to the U.S,, to pursue graduate studies, she attended Huddersfield University and the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama gaining a BA (Hons) in music performance and a post-graduate certificate in orchestral studies, respectively. Once in the U.S. she attended Ball State University, for a Master of Music, and then completed a Doctor of Musical Arts in Bassoon Performance at Arizona State University. While at both universities she was a teaching assistant, teaching private lessons and woodwind methods.
Whilst in the United States, Lindsey’s primary teachers have been John Miller, Arthur Weisberg and Homer Pence. She has attended many International Double Reed Society, CMEA and CBDA Conventions, CSU Fresno Double Reed Day’s, Glickman-Popkin Bassoon Camps and John Miller Symposiums.
Lindsey is active in the San Francisco Bay Area and surrounding Valley as a Bassoonist and Contrabassoonist. She frequently performs with such groups as the Berkeley Symphony, Fresno Philharmonic, Music in the Mountains, Napa Symphony, North State Symphony, Reno Philharmonic, Sacramento Philharmonic, Santa Rosa Symphony, Santa Cruz Symphony, Silicon Valley Symphony, Stockton Symphony, Stockton Opera, Townsend Opera Players, Vallejo Symphony, the Adhoc Chamber Players, Capitol City Chamber Players and the Capitol Camerata.
Lindsey has been on the faculty at Sac State since 1997 and has recently joined the faculty of University of Nevada, Reno. She is also active as a private teacher, reed maker and clinician, frequently adjudicating auditions, running sectional rehearsals for regional youth orchestras and CMEA events, and presenting clinics at MENC and CMEA conventions. She also acts as a musical mentor for the Academy of Music at All Hallows – an organization for young professional musicians.
In addition to performance and teaching, Lindsey has over 12 years of experience as an Operations Manager taking care of logistics for concert tours and individual performances for groups as diverse as chamber ensembles, concert bands, marching bands, and rock bands. In such a capacity she is experienced in procuring sponsorship, performance venues, media coverage, coordinating transportation and hotel reservations, creating tour books which include itineraries and detailed driving directions, scheduling rehearsal times, doing site surveys, coordinating stage management, managing credit cards, monitoring financial concerns, and creating after-actions reports which are entered into databases for future reference.
She is also the Assistant Director of the Capital Chamber Music Workshop, a two-week summer workshop for approximately 70 student and amateur chamber musicians in which daily concerts feature approximately 150 chamber music works performed annually. She assists the Director with managing a staff of 8-12, $65,000 annual budget, workshop program and logistics, and the Al Loeffler Chamber Music Library.
Recent Solo appearances have included the Dietter Concerto for Two Bassoons, which was performed with John Miller, Jr., Principal Bassoon of the Minnesota Orchestra, and the West Coast Premier of Bart Cumming’s Concerto for Contra Bassoon and Wind Ensemble. Lindsey has appeared on at least eight orchestra, band and chamber music recordings.
