John Dornenburg teaches music history and literature at CSUS, as well as general education courses in music appreciation and jazz history.
As a viola da gamba soloist, he has performed widely in Europe, Australia, New Zealand and across the USA with groups including the San Francisco Symphony, Honolulu Symphony, the Oregon Bach Festival, Carmel Bach Festival, American Bach Soloists, Magnificat, Berkeley Festival, Kilkenny Festival (Ireland), York Festival (U.K.), Krakow Festival (Poland), Melbourne Fesvival (Australia), and the Festival of New American Music here at CSUS. He is director of the Sex Chordæ Consort of Viols, co-founder of the ensemble Music's Re-creation, and in the San Francisco Bay Area can also be heard with Magnificat, Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, and American Bach Soloists, among many other groups.
He was awarded the Soloist's Diploma for his studies with Wieland Kuijken at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague; prior to this he studied baroque performance practices with Nikolaus Harnoncourt at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria. John is currently on the faculty of Stanford University's music department (1988-present), and has taught at the University of Melbourne, Australia, the University of Washington, and Carnegie-Mellon University.In addition to his university teaching positions, John is a frequent faculty member at workshops for viola da gamba across the USA and as far afield as Australia.
He has made over twenty five compact disc recordings, which include solo performances of music by J.S. Bach, C.P.E. Bach, G.P. Telemann, G.F. Handel, and M. Marais.
