Professor Omari Tau
A Sacramento native, Omari Tau received his Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education at Michigan State University followed by a Master’s Degree in Vocal Music Performance at The Moores School of Music - University of Houston. At home in the operatic and musical theatre world as well as in jazz and pop genres, Tau has proven to be a versatile educator and performing artist.
He has directed for Houston Grand Opera’s Education and Outreach Department preparing young professionals and college level artists for the stage and has been teaching private voice over the last fifteen years. Tau taught early childhood music at the Michigan State University - Community Music School and has also been a guest instructor for Walter Sisulu University in Mthatha, South Africa.
Before joining Sacramento State, Mr. Tau completed a nine year tour of Disney’s THE LION KING performing the role of Banzai which traveled throughout the United States, Mexico and Canada. Other credits include plays at the Tony Award winning Alley Theatre and musicals such as Evita with original choreographer Larry Fuller at Theater Under The Stars. Classical voice recitals include the premieres of Michael Remson’s “After Whitman” and “nicht anna” by Phillip Blume at La Fondation Royaumont - Voix Nouvelles Festival in France. Tau appears on Albany Records in Roger Nelson’s “A Room With A View”. He is a featured artist on “A Lion King Christmas”.
Locally, Mr. Tau has worked with Sacramento Opera, TheatreWorks, and Sacramento Music Circus.
