2009 Summer Jazz Camp
July 5-10

The Jazz Studies Department at Sacramento State University is proud to host the Summer Jazz Camp featuring the Jim Widner Big Band. It is an intensive week of big band rehearsals, sectionals, master classes, improvisation, theory, and arranging. The centerpiece of this camp is the Jim Widner Big Band in residency. This band consists of professional jazz musicians from throughout the country who instruct camp participants each day. The camp is open to instrumentalists of all abilities and ages ranging from middle school to senior citizens. Nightly performances by the Jim Widner Big Band are a highlight for the camp participants and the community. Students not only learn from, but also study with, play with, and listen to jazz musicians of the highest caliber.

Application Procedure

The 2009 Sacramento State Summer Jazz Camp is open to students age 14 or older who have spent a minimum of one year of study on their instrument. College students, instrumental teachers/educators and adults are encouraged to apply. Applicants will be notified by letter of their acceptance status immediately following receipt of their application.

Please apply early. The number of spaces for participation is limited.

Fees and Tuition

Commuter tuition fee -- $412

Includes:

  • An opportunity to work with professional musicians for five days in a variety of settings:
  • Master classes, theory and arranging classes, sectional rehearsals, big band rehearsals, jazz improvisation classes, and student combos
  • Five evening concerts by members of the camp faculty
  • Access to recreational activities on the CSUS campus includes tennis, swimming and volleyball.
  • Optional lunch and dinner meal plan in the CSUS Dining Commons
    (please refer to camp application for information and payment plans)

Residential tuition fee -- $895

Includes the above items, plus:

  • 5 nights lodging in air-conditioned residence halls
  • 16 meals in the CSUS Dining Commons

All evening concerts are free and open to the public.


Parents should arrange to pick up students at the dorm before the final concert on Friday night.
Residents should plan on checking out of the dorms between 5:00 - 6:30 pm.

About Jim Widner

An alumnus of the Stan Kenton, Woody Herman, and Glenn Miller big bands, Jim Widner is celebrating his 22nd year of hosting summer camps all across the United States . As a bassist with the Stan Kenton Orchestra, Jim was strongly influenced and motivated by Kenton's dedication to young student musicians. He was a faculty member of the Kenton camps for 10 years and helped Stan organize and expand his camps from California to other locations across the United States.

A graduate of the University of Missouri , Jim also holds an MA degree from Memphis State University and has done postgraduate work at the University of North Texas . Jim has performed at the world famous Lionel Hampton and Montreaux Jazz Festivals. His performance background includes concert dates with Clark Terry, Buddy DeFranco, Mulgrew Miller, Louis Bellson, Randy Brecker, Bill Watrous, Marilyn Maye, and an appearance before former President Bill Clinton. Jim also serves as guest conductor for numerous All-State Jazz Bands. In 1999, students at the University of Missouri-Columbia, renamed the music wing of the fine arts residential college, "Widner House," in honor of him.

Currently Jim is Artist in Residence/Coordinator of Jazz Studies at the University of Missouri - St. Louis and is a Yamaha performing artist. He also maintains an ambitious clinic and festival schedule at high schools and colleges throughout the United States . This includes a series of summer jazz camps, spearheaded by members of the Jim Widner Big Band, which records with Chase Music Group. Their critically acclaimed CD's include "Yesterdays and Today," "Body and Soul," and "Live," the Jim Widner Big Band Rides Again."
