Celebrating the Year of the Monkey

One of the region's
most anticipated Chinese New Year events returns to California State University
, Sacramento at 11 a.m. , Saturday, Jan. 31, in the University Union Ballroom
with the 7 th annual Chinese New Year Festival celebrating the Year of the Monkey.
Events marking
the 4701 lunar year on the Chinese calendar include a traditional lion dance,
martial arts, children's games and music. Featured during this year's celebration
will be the unveiling of the “Lunar New Year of the Monkey” postage
stamp. Ballroom dancing will also be a highlight, starting at 8 p.m.
“The celebration is not only for the Chinese community, it's for everybody,” says
Vicki Beaton with the Chinese New Year Celebration Alliance, organizers of
the event. “The main purpose is to have a New Year event for the region, rather
than have to drive to San Francisco .”
Tickets are $3 general, $1 for children 12 and younger, and are available
