One of the region's most anticipated Chinese New Year events returns to California State University , Sacramento at 11 a.m. , Saturday, Jan. 31, in the University Union Ballroom with the 7 th annual Chinese New Year Festival celebrating the Year of the Monkey.

Events marking the 4701 lunar year on the Chinese calendar include a traditional lion dance, martial arts, children's games and music. Featured during this year's celebration will be the unveiling of the “Lunar New Year of the Monkey” postage stamp. Ballroom dancing will also be a highlight, starting at 8 p.m.

“The celebration is not only for the Chinese community, it's for everybody,” says Vicki Beaton with the Chinese New Year Celebration Alliance, organizers of the event. “The main purpose is to have a New Year event for the region, rather than have to drive to San Francisco .”

Tickets are $3 general, $1 for children 12 and younger, and are available at the door. For more information or to arrange tickets in advance for groups, call (916) 601-7511. Media assistance is available from CSUS public affairs at (916) 278-6156.
