CSUS hosts a gospel tribute to MLK
On Oct. 16, 1967 famed civil rights
leader Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered a passionate speech
to a standing-room only crowd at California State University,
Sacramento. In commemoration of the 35th anniversary of this
event, the University will host a concert in remembrance of
King's fight for the freedom, equality, and dignity of all
races and peoples.
At 5 p.m., Jan. 21 in the CSUS University Union Ballroom a
300 person, multiracial, interfaith gospel choir will commemorate
- through song - King's accomplishments. For the past 10 years
this popular concert has been held at the Sacramento Convention
Center. This is the first year the concert is being held at
the University.
"The relevance of having the concert at CSUS is the fact
that we didn't go through the civil rights movement to sit
at the lunch counter or at the front of the bus. We fought
for equal rights in education," says Kim Harrington,
president of the CSUS Black Staff and Faculty Association
and sponsor of the event.
Tickets for the gospel concert are $10 in advance and $12
at the door. Tickets are available at the CSUS Ticket Office
at (916) 278-4323. Additional media assistance is available
at CSUS public affairs at (916) 278-6156.
