Black History Month

Ken "Coach" Carter set to speak - Canceled
Jazz great Freddie Hubbard set to lecture and perform

African American achievements and issues will be the focus in February during a series of events at California State University, Sacramento coinciding with the nation’s celebration of Black History Month.

Speakers and performers will include controversial basketball coach Ken Carter, jazz great Freddie Hubbard and the Harlem Gospel Choir.

Activities begin with an opening reception set for 7 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 1 in the University Union Ballroom featuring speaker Kilolo Umi, a member of All-African People’s Revolutionary Party.

Talks continue with Carter at noon on Monday, Feb. 14 in the University’s Multi-Cultural Center. Samuel L. Jackson portrays Carter in the current top-grossing film Coach Carter. The movie tracks the sometimes extreme measures Carter took to motivate the high school basketball team he coached to score more points on the court and in the classroom.

Canceled - Jazz legend Freddie Hubbard will perform with Sacramento State jazz faculty at 8 p.m., Friday, Feb. 18 in the University Union Ballroom. Tickets are $15 general and $5 for students. Hubbard, one of the most prolific trumpeters from the mid-1960s to the late 1980s, will speak at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 16 in the University Union Redwood Room.

And the incomparable Harlem Gospel Choir will perform at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 24 in the University Union Ballroom. Tickets are $15 general and $10 for students.

Lectures presented throughout the month will have topics ranging from black empowerment to Ebonics to racial preferences. Comedians and film presentations will also be on tap.
