Faculty Senate to honor scholarship recipients
The winners of the 2004 Merit Scholarship Award will be honored
at a special meeting of the Faculty Senate on Thursday, Feb. 17 at 4 p.m. in
the Hinde Auditorium.
Winners are chosen based upon high academic achievement and their service and
contributions to the campus and community. The scholarship award is equivalent
to registration fees for the spring 2005 semester.
The recipients to be honored are Samantha Hilber, Sheena Murray, Sheila Bumgarner
and Kristen Sweet.
Samantha Hilber, a senior biology major, is conducting research of the eggs
of convict cichlid fish for a student research competition and is active at
the University as a new student orientation leader, a member of the marching
band and a coach for a Special Olympics soccer team. Hilber plans to attend
graduate school to study animal behavior.
Sheena Murray, a senior and double major in economics and government, works
and attends school full-time while active in several organizations, including
the College Democrats, F.M.L.A. and the Sacramento National Organization of
Women, where she is a board member. Murray intends to pursue a master’s
degree in economics and work in public policy development.
Sheila Bumgarner, a senior social work major, overcame personal difficulties
and now works in the community as a volunteer with Safe-Quest, the outreach
program at Solano County Jail and Solano County Youth and Family Services. Bumgarner
plans to continue her education in the master’s of social work program.
Kristen Sweet, a second-year student in the master’s of social work program,
has been dedicated to social work for several years, as a volunteer in a treatment
center for two years for Americorps and as a Peace Corp volunteer in Ecuador
for two years. Sweet is currently interning with the Foster Youth Services program
and intends to become a licensed clinical social worker following the completion
of her master’s degree.
