Aguilar, a senior associate with the Sacramento firm Atkinson,
Andelson, Loya, Ruud and Romo with broad experience in education issues, will
serve as the University’s campus attorney. In this capacity, he will report
jointly to University President Alexander Gonzalez and the California State
University system general counsel. Along with advising on such topics as labor,
civil rights, contracts and government regulations, Aguilar will handle personnel
and other administrative hearings, and manage litigation.
In addition to his current position representing public school districts in
litigation in state court and in administrative tribunals, Aquilar’s experience
in education law includes 13 years as deputy general counsel with the California
Department of Education. There he represented the department, the Superintendent
of Public Instruction and the State Board of Education. He has also worked as
staff counsel for the California Department of Health Services and as a legal
assistant with the Office of the California Attorney General.
Aguilar holds a bachelor’s degree in social sciences from UC Irvine and
a juris doctorate from the UC Berkeley School of Law.
