An evening with legendary opera singer Beverly Sills, an exhibit
of famed California artists brought together for the first
time and a poetry reading by Pulitzer Prize-winner Jorie Graham
highlight the 10th annual Festival of the Arts at California
State University, Sacramento, April 4 - 14.
More than 20,000 people attended last year's various dance,
design, art, poetry, theatre and music events and this year's
festival promises to gather even bigger crowds with an exciting
10th anniversary schedule.
Sills
is a child of immigrants, the mother of two children challenged
by birth defects, the first female director of the New York
City Opera, recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom
and America's most celebrated soprano. She will be on campus
at 8 p.m., Thursday, April 11 in the University Union Ballroom.
Tickets for the event are $10 general and for free CSUS students.
"The Society of Six," an exhibition of more than
25 paintings by California plein-air artists created during
the early part of the 20th Century, will be on display at
the CSUS Library Gallery starting April 4. The exhibition
marks the first time the works, most from the private collection
of CSUS emeritus professor Robert E. Aichele, have been shown
together.
The Society of Six includes artists Selden Gile, August Gay,
Maurice Logan, Bernard von Eichman, William Clapp and Louis
Siegriest. Their bold and colorful landscapes are now considered
some of the most advanced and original works produced in the
West.
Among
the festival's various poetry events is a reading by winner
of the 1996 Pulitzer Prize for poetry Jorie Graham at 7:30
p.m., Saturday, April 13 in the University Union Hinde Auditorium.
