Memorial concert honors
original CSUS faculty member
Frederick
Westphal, who was hired at California State University, Sacramento just
a year after it was founded and helped develop its music department,
will be remembered at a memorial clarinet concert at 4 p.m., Friday, Feb.
20 at Fremont Presbyterian Church in Sacramento.
Westphal died Dec. 23, 2003 at the age of 87.
Westphal’s tenure at CSUS lasted from 1948 to 1986. He taught a variety
of courses, but was best known for playing and writing music for clarinet.
Before joining the faculty at CSUS, he earned a master’s degree and doctorate
at the University of Rochester Eastman School of Music. He eventually recruited
a number of new faculty members from Eastman for the growing CSUS music department.
From 1958 to 1993 Westphal also served as the consulting editor for music with
William C. Brown, which is now part of McGraw Hill. He was involved with developing
112 books and 164 revisions.
There are five scholarships in Westphal’s name across the country, including
a clarinet scholarship at CSUS.
The memorial concert will be open to family and friends, who are invited to a
gathering afterward in Ferguson Hall.
Fremont Presbyterian is at 5770 Carlson
