Negro League tribute game plays out history

Baseball Hall of Fame player Satchel Paige once said, “Don’t look back: something might be gaining on you,” but at 1 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 23, Sacramento State will take a look back at an important time in baseball’s history.

Members of the Morris League, a baseball league organized by Sacramento State students Dante and Dominic Morris, will sponsor a tribute game honoring the Negro Leagues. The game will be held at the McAuliffe Field at 3001 State University Drive, and is free and open to the public.

During times of segregation, the Negro Leagues operated as the professional baseball league for African Americans—parallel to the Major League Baseball organization.

An introductory ceremony will begin at noon. Scheduled to participate in the event are Frank Williams, former Negro League player for the Kansas City Monarchs, and former major league player Joe Dorsey. Morris League players will wear the 1930s style baseball uniforms.

“We want everyone to come out to the game,” Dante says. “We want people to walk away with a sense of the Negro Leagues.” The Negro League tribute game is one of more than 20 events scheduled for February’s Black History Month at Sacramento State.

For more information on the Negro Leagues tribute game, or to contact the Morris League, e-mail morrisleague@yahoo.com, or visit www.morrisleague.com.
