After 15 years of directing performances for Sacramento Black Art of Dance, founder and director Linda Goodrich will get to sit back and let others handle the next show as the modern dance group’s choreographers pay tribute to her and her artistic vision.
S/BAD is a Sacramento State student group organized in 1993 by Goodrich, who is also chair of Sacramento State’s Theatre and Dance department. “Testimony: A Tribute to Dr. Linda S. Goodrich” will be staged by troupe members at 8 p.m., Feb. 28 through March 1 and March 7-8; at 2 p.m., March 2 and 9; and at 6:30 p.m., March 5-6.
Goodrich, who performed with many professional ensembles throughout the country, has inspired many others to teach dance within their communities.
That includes S/BAD Associate Artistic Director Nathan Jones. “The tribute came out of a lot of love for Dr. Goodrich,” Jones says. “We wanted to really thank her for her inspiration.”
“Testimony” is being directed by the group’s members, and pieces will reflect themes such as unity and love.
Jones says Goodrich showed him how dance is more than an emotive expression—it can also communicate stories of history, love and power.
S/BAD uses the style of Black concert dance, Jones says, but has always been a multi-ethnic group. “We use concert dance to show ways a community can really work together and do something positive for itself,” Jones says.
