Sacramento Black Art of Dance, California State University,
Sacramento’s premier dance company, is set to present a spring show based
on the multicultural heritage of its own performers with Ancestral Memories.
The show opens at 8 p.m., Thursday, March 10 in the University’s Dancespace
at Solano Hall 1010. Performances continue at 8 p.m., March 11 to 13 and 16
to 20.
Original pieces by several S/BAD choreographers working under
the direction of Sacramento State professor Linda Goodrich will celebrate the
cultural memories of the company members with dance. The African American, Chinese,
Hispanic and other ancestors of the performers will be honored through movement
and music.
Dramatic, dancer-dwarfing puppets created by Sacramento State
professor Richard Bay will be intertwined into the onstage action as well.
Although not presented during Black History Month, Goodrich says this dance
concert is intended to reinforce the principles of that observance: reverence
for one's history, appreciation of one's ancestors and a sharing of cultural
values.
Tickets are $15 general, $13 for students and seniors, $12 for Sacramento State
students and $9 for youth. They are available from the CSUS Ticket Office at
(916) 278-4323 or Tickets.com.
